BENT. DORSEY IN DAWSON,
He Gave Up aGood Railroad Job to C
There. ar)
. Mrs.B. Ns Shoecraft of this city ‘iva
just received a letter-from her brother, . o
Bentley Dorsey,written at Dawson City
on November 16th. The young man
used. to live at Grass Valley, but had
latterly been ‘working for the Valley
meking his
headquarters at Fresno. Last July he
quit his job and struck ont for the
Klondike where he arrived Septembef
18th. He had a rough trip but finally
reached his destination with enough’
food to last him through the winter.
The journey and the supplies he took
“fatong cost him an even thousand ‘pl
lars.
The day the letter was written the
thermometer was 40 degrees below zero.
At half-past three o’clock darkness
came on and the writer went into a
saloon to finish it. The saloon was
lighted ‘by one very small single-wick
kerosene lamp. The note-paper the
writing was done on coat fifty cents. a
“. sheet, and there are fifteen sheets in
the letter. Atthe time of writing flour
was selling for $400 a sack, twentypound boxes of candles for, $120, beans .
and rice $2. pound, and other things
starvation during the winter, but thers
was no food to spare. “
Mr. Dorsey says El Dorado Creek is
very rich, but all the claims are taken
up. Bonanza Creek is spotted. The
country is not cut up with myriads of.
water ways like Nevada county, but.
they are 200 to 300 miles apart and
there is no way for the prospector to
transport his supplies readily from
one to the other. Wages were $1 an
bour, but owing to: the long nights a
man. could not hope to earn more than
$5 a day.
The general tenor of the letter indicates that the situation is not site

county, and he has long been one of
the most. prominent and successful
business men in his locality. It is be. Jieved that Governor Budd will favor
him with the appointment for several .
reasons. He is on the right side of the.
political fence to suit the Governor's
ideas. At the last election he was a
candidate for the place and was defeated by a very small majority after
having made a clean and gallant fight.
Then too it is thought that his businéss qualifications and probitywill be
impressed upon the Governor by his
friends as an additional point in his
behalf. If a Democrat must be named
for the place we do not know. that‘ tbe
Governor can do better than to select
