The information that Fred Zeitler, the popular and ef. ficient superintendent of. the Champion Mine in Nevada City Mining District, has resigned his position and is going I t regret by the people of this community. Never has there been a single man who-has-come-to‘this section and has~ ac= complished more good in the development of the mining interests of this district than has Mr. Zeitler. When he took hold of the now famous Champion mining property, some eight or nine years ago, the mine was not considered to be worth much and was said to be “played out,” but when Mr. Zeitler took hold of the property and systematically worked and developed it, besides improving it with the best machinery chtainable, the mine at once began to take on new’ Tues, Saar (4 life, until now, by his ability and energy he has brought the property up to what ii is—the best and largest mine in this district and one of the best in the State, Not only has he done this, but he has been interested in and assisted in opening up and developing several other mining properties in this county with great success, and they all give promise of becoming fine-paying., properties, It is safe to say that there never was another mine superintendent in this city district who was held in such universal and high esteem by his employes as Mr. Zeitler is. Mr. Zeitler has not only proved to be one of the best mining men Nevada City ever had, but he has also been one of the most enterprising and progressive citizens of this community. He has held the honored position of president of our local Board of Trade and.has also taken an active interFour Men Stopped By for the man with the pistol, but no clue could-be found, The Marvelous Traveling companied by Capt. Bartlett’s skill is something remarkable, and has won him high honors.in-the service of the United States Government. He uses regulat grade est in every public enterprise for—the—prosperity-and-upbuilding of our community. In social and fraternal circles, Mr. Zeitler and his amia: ble wife have instilled themselves into the esteem and affection of all our-people. Mrs. Zeitler has been a prominent and popular member of Laurel Parlor of Native Daughters and an indefatigable worker in all social events given by this fraternity of ladies. In other circles of society she has ‘always been regarded as a leader and favorite, possessing a a sweet disposition and the enviable qualities of energy, tact and competency. The departure of Mr. and Mrs. Zeitler from our community will be deeply felt by our people and they will be “greatly missed. It has been said that there is never a va_cancy made but what it can be filled by others, but we very much doubt whether the rule ma apply in Gis particular instance. It is the unanimous wish of all our people that Mr. Zeitler reconsider his action in resigning the superintendency of the Champion; and decide toremain in our community. It would give us great pleasure to announce the fact that the gentleman had changed his mind, as. it would also the peopleto know it. 444444444648 High School Question. sy The meting held at Grass Valley on Saturday for the purpose of discussing the advisability. of establishing a county high school, proved to be a very interesting one, and good results are.expected to follow. There was a large atttendance of prominenticitizens of both cities, among them being the. members of the Board of Supervisors, Superior Judge Nilon, School Trustees and many of the county off--cers. The meeting was called to order by W. F. Englebright of this city, while H. I. Fuchs and A. B. Champion of Grass Valley were chosen president and secretary, respectively. ' To bring the matter before the meeting, a motion was made by.ex-Senator Preston to establish union district high] schools at both Nevada City and Grass Valley. Subsequent discussion showed that the majority~favored this course. County Treasurer, it was estimated that a union high school townships would necessitate a tax rate of from 20 to 22 cents on each hundred dollars. For Nevada and all other townships a rate of from-23 ta 25 cents would be sufficient.
