Dreadful Crime.
Los ANGELES, January 12th.—A. A.
Bolks, a well-to-do farmer uf Sioux
City, Ia., mardered his wife in a boarding bouse at 6616 Thorne street, this
city, at 2 o’clock this morning by cutting her throat with a pocket knife,
and then turning the weapon on bhimself, ended his own life in a similar
manner. The deed was committed in
the presence of their four-year-old
son, who was awakened by the sounds
of the struggle, and gave the alarm,
but too late to aronse assistance. Both
were dead before medical aid could be
sammoned. Bolks was supposed to
be temporarily deranged over religious
matters and to have committed the
crims in a moment of irresponsibility.
He had been acting queerly for about
8 week, and one oesasion recently
kept hie family up all night praying,
exhibiting a revolver at the time and
threateniag to take their lives. Bolks
came to Los Angeles from Sioux City
about two weeks ago, accompaniéd by
his uine-year-old sop, and was followed
a short time later by his wife and
other members of his family. He was
apparently possessed of considerable
means, :

circle from the center of the city, the
radius being a distance of several
miles. The duration was over an hour.
Unusual atmospheric conditions aggravated by smoke were generally a3cepted as the cause. The phenomenon
was accompaniek bya fall of snow,
while @ pall of impenetrable, appearing clouds enveloped all the thoroughfares,

Nevada county’s apportionment under the new State law concerning
high schools has been received. It ig
as follows: Grass Valley, $879.57:
Nevada Oity, $942.69; Meadow Lake,
$627.09: Thie makes a total of $2,449,85, while the taxes for this purpose
from-the county amount to only $600,
The apportionment is based on the at
tendance, namely: Grass Valley, 68
Nevada City, 71; Meadow Lake, 81.
The new law, which was passed by
the last Legislatare, is of great benefit to thie county, inasmuch as the
amount of State: money received is
sbont four times as ‘much as the sum
paid in the way of additional taxes.
The law requires that a speciil tex of
one per cent. be levied throughout the
State for the support of ‘the high
schools.In several counties there are
no high schools and the counties that
have them are the ones that are the
most benefited. In Nevada county
there are three high echools, while in
some counties there are many more
and they are correspondingly better
off, The total number of high schools
in the State is 148, and $164,93.88 constitate the sum raised for distribation.
County Superintendent Joseph GQ.
O’Neill has also received the apportionment for the grammar schools
from the State for the next six months,
Tt amounts to $28,114, and will be apportioned on the basis of $6.35 to each
school attendant, the census reports
showing that there are 3,640 school
children in ths county.
