Last evening about half-past 8 “o'clock a young man named, Thomas Manuel, who is employed as wiper at. the Narrow Gauge engine house in this city, met with a serious‘accident. He'was on his way to the depot, and in attempting to overtake one of the hotel busses’ he ran down ‘Broad ‘street from the National Hotel, forgetting that there was no bridge across the creek. There was no barricade up to. warn ‘pedestrians and Manuel went off the end~of the sidewalk and into the creek between the abutmént and the end of the sidewalk. Holbrook Stabbed by William see ‘OHearn. _ Saturday afternoon about 5 o ‘clock William O’Hearn and Frank Holbrook got into a quagrel on Pine street, near, Spring, during which O’Hearn drew a poeket knife and. stabbed Holbrook, the blade entering the latter’s side, near the waist, producing a wound about two inches long, but not more than a quarter of an inch deep. The blow was a dewnward one, and did not cause much injury, the thick shirts worn by Holbrook preventing the knife from cutting very deep. It seems that O’Hearn was bothering a boy and that Holbrook took the boy’s part, this act of his causing the row that ended in the stabbing. Both men had been drinking. oa O’Hearn was taken before Justice Mulloy, and a charge preferred against him for assault with a deadly weapon. Condition of Millard, Sacramento Bee: Word comes from Los Angeles that the condition of LieutenantGovernor Millard is considerably improved. A destructive fire occurred at Wheatland Saturday night by which the town was al-+. most déstroyed. The postoffice, Wheatland . hotel, Central hotel, Gem saloon, Duplex’s barber shop andresidence were entirely destroyed. Win, M, Minton and C, J, Garland, -who the Rainbow Mining Company, filed their petition in insolvency in the Superior Court icte. The majority of the creditors of the insolvents reside in Sierra and Nevada counties. The debts of the insolvents amount to $10,460. The partners got hold of some mining property and put ina good deal of money te work it. Grass Valley Telegraph: The many friends here of Victor Clement will be pained to learn that he met ,with an accident some time since by which he-loses the use of his right arm. Mr. Clement is managing large mining properties in Johannesburg, South Africa, and while on his way: to his business his team ran away and Mr. Clement was thrown to the ground. This fall was a violent one, resulting in a broken collar-bone and a dislocated elbow. The collar-bone was set and soon got all right, but the the surgeon did not discover. that the elbow was dislocated for quite a while, in fact, not until it was too late to remedy the injury, The best surgeons in Africa were consulted, but could do nothing for Mr. Clement,_.He finally went to Paris, France, do nothing for him. His right arm is éntirely useless and always will be. Thieves tried to break into Mrs. Dickerman’s house on Winter street, a few nights ago, but were frightened off. They then attempted to get into John Heyer’s residence, next door, and succeeded in opening one of the doors, when they were alarmed by the barking of a dog and fled. There is no doubt but what the town is infested with sneak thieves, burglars and other hard characters.
