The letters further state that the massacres will continue throughout the winter, More Battleships. A man was arraigned before Justice Richardson on a charge of disorderly ecnduet. He was fonnd intoxicated on Clark street. * The prisoner told: the court he was not in the habit of getting drunk and declared on this occasion he was excusable, : ‘*Your honor,’’.said. the prisoner, ‘I got home late last night, and before starting to bed I went t6 my medicine cabinet to get a dose of cough sirup. I thought I knew just where the bottle stood, and that I could get it in the dark. I made a mistake and drank a big swig of some strange mixture. I thought I was poisoned, and rushing down to the drug store with the bottle still in my hand I asked the clerk for an antidote. He smelled what was left in the bottle, and then says he: ‘My friend, all the antidote ‘you need is to swallow a comb and brush. ,That stuff is hair vigor.’ ‘* Judge, I just felt so ashamed of myself that I started drinking. ”’ He was discharged.—Chicago Inter Ocean. A Lincoln Letter. George Kluetsch, editor of the Lincoln (Neb. ) Freie Presse, has in his possession in the handwriting of Abraham Lincoln, writtén in 1859, an interesting letter. It was written to T. J. Pickett; at one time editor of the Republican paper in Rock Island, Ills., who has given it to Mr. Kluetsch. It reads as follows: SPRINGFIELD, Ils., April 16, 1859. T. J. Pickett, Esq.: My Dzar Srr—Yours of the 18th is just received. My engagements are such that I cannot, at any very early day, visit Rock Island to deliver a lecture or for any other object. As to the other matter you kindly mention, I ‘must, in candor, say I do not consider myself fit for the A san mcorictd I certainly am flattered and gratified’ that some partial friends think of me in that connection, but I really think it best for our cause that no concerted effort such as you suggest should be made. Let this be considered confidential. Yours very truly, Old English Journalism. The interesting reminiscences of G. J. Holyoke, recently issued, give some facts showing that English — journals ‘were not always as free from scurrility as they are now. The company is a thoroughly well organized one and has been playing a San Francisco a long time,.in which city Miss Plaisted is a great favorite, She is a charming singer and a very vivacious little actress, who never fails to please her auditors and win from them the warmest enconiums, Her friends and acquaintances in this city will doubtless’ give her a cordial welcome. It has been’ several years since she last visited here. Manager Jacobs informs us that the Theater has been engaged for March 25th * by a company fromi Frohman’s Broadway Theatre, New York. Nellie McHenry is the leading lady of the company, and the play is to be ‘‘A Bicycle Girl,” a piece that is kaving a big run in the principal Eastern cities, D. Shearer is suffering from blood poisoning, resulting from injuries sustained some time since while working at. the Nevada City mine, Dr. Muller is attending the case and thinks Shearer will recover, though it will be a month or to before he can expect to be well, : Miss Nellie Gummoe, eldest daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Richard Gummoe of Grass Valley, was married at the home of her parents last night, to Joseph Rickard of San Francisco, where the young couple will reside, Chas, Hill of Grass Valley was struck over the eye by a heavy piece of — timber early this morning in ‘the Crown Point mine, He was knocked senseless and after being taken to town Dr. Brown dressed an ugly gash whicn had been inflicted, George Mainhart had a runaway last night while returning to Grass Valley from this city. The Native Sons will hold a high jinks tonight. After the election and installation of officers an entertainment will be given by the C’s and D’s.
