An Qdious Decision. —.
The Supreme Court has handed down
& decision which is calculated to make
the personal property tax more objectionable than ever. The majority of
the members of that august body hold
that “where a taxpayer has 0 real
property, or none suificient to make
the payment.of hig taxes, the Assessor
is required to Collect them at the-time
of making his assessment, and in case
of failure to pay, to sellsufficient of
the property of the amount of.the tax,
with costs,” This decision wa3~presented by Chief Jystice Beatty and conple, Garoutte and McFarland, Justices
Van Fleet and Harrison dissenting.
A Siga ‘of Hard Times.
Oupid Greany.bas a kick coming. It
is all on account of the lack of demand
for marriage licenses. He has not had
a cali for one since the third instant.
He says he cannot understand the
reason of the slump in the market, and
that if it keeps up a few days longer he
will begin to think the claims of the
Republican newspapers that hard times’
have ceased, are not well founded,
