SOME BENEFACTORS DO
NOT DESERVE GRATITUDE
IGHTLY enough an ingrate is esteemed among the
lowest of men. Not to be thankful for kindness received is to proclaim oneself unfit for human society.
But in spite of the fashion of. declaring that gratitude
has gone out and with due respect to a number of philanthropists who complain of the thankfulness of the people, it
is the fact that most men are grateful when they really ought
to be gratelul. The charge of ingratitude both against mankind in general and against individuals in particular is made
too trequently and without sufficient cause.
A man is bound to be grateful to one who helps him or
is kind to him for pure love, or charity or out of courtesy; to
one who does him a service disinterestedly and without selfish hope of gaining by it. But. man is under no obligation of gratitude to a benefactor who had selfish motives in
him a service, was merely
making a-bargain. Such a benefactor one,is bound to requite in kind and degree, but one is not bound to do more for
him. Unfortgnately most benefactors come under this
head.
For instance, the politician who appoints a man to office
has a selfish motive in nine cases out of ter. He makes the
appointment in expectation of pleasing certain interests, or
building up a political. machine or adding to the glory of his own administration. He has not, probably, any personal love:
for his appointee and if policy required he would sacrifice
that appointee without hesitating. But he expects gratitude
from his appointee and he is an extraordinary politician if
he does not believe that he owns the man body and soul and,
-_ pas an everlasting claim on, his gratitude. The appointee
ought to be measureably grateful, perhaps, ‘but he bas-a
right to be as selfish as his benefactor. Of favors done in
business the same may be said. Most of them are done for
commercial reasons, either to-get trade or hold it, and they
ice man as they pass.by.
The miners who took vacations daring the holidays may eonsent to work
overtime to keew up the supply of coal.

When a man is heard declaiming against the ingratitude

sometimes, to ask what his motive was in giving that help.
Was it a clean, unselfish motive, meriting gratitude? Or
was it aselfish motive deserving a guid pro quo and nothing
