As two ladies were coming down Broad street Tuesday. night they observed rays of light issuing from between the cracks of the sidewalk in front of Morris Gallagher’s residence, one door below Pennsylvania Engine Company’s building. The occupants of the house were notified and an investigation was made. Underneath the building, between two joists, was a lighted candle. and. around. it. the wood was already scorched. The flre was immediately extinguished. How the candle got there, who put ‘it there or what the object was, is an enigma. Boys in the neighborhood, upon being questioned, profess to know nothing of the mysterious candle, and no clew can be obtained, If it was the work ofan incendiary it came near proving successful, for had the candle been allowed to burn a little longer the flames would surely have commun!}cated to thedry, inflamable timber. Ae it was a serious conflagration was pro‘ably epared to that portion of town. —— —-—_+ oe Weather Report.
