The upper tunnel wili be cleaned out, an incline made to bedrock, and drainage effected by pumping. The Maple Grove Mine adjoining the Sonth Fork, with 2,000 feet of this channel, has been tunneled for neatly 400 feet. The yield of gold is-similar to that of the Ruby at the lowest known part of this already proved auriferous deep ancient river bed. eee The Deepest Mines. A grewsome discovery was made Saturday on an abandoned road near North San Juan. Jobn Fuller found a heap of human bones and the iron-work of a double-barreled gun that had evidently been burned over by the forest fire which swept through that section last summer. The gun had apparently been inlaid in gold, perhaps with the owner’s pame, but only a few of the letters can be madé out. One hammer rested on the tube, the other was standing, and . both tubes were capped but the barrels are both empty. It is supposed that’ one barrel was discharged by the man, the other being exploded by the heat of the fire. Some people think the skeleton is that of an old man named Fowler who mysteriously disappeared from Sweetland fourteen years ago and has never since been heard from. He had been threatening for some time to leave bis home and seek pastures new. One day he and his dog were missing. The whole country turned out to search for them. The dog came back in a few days, but the old man’s fate is a mystery to this day. What makes it seem unlikely that the bones found near North San Juan are his, is the fact that he did not take a gun with him when he went away. Equal to Any Emergency. Reserve Them Without Extra Charge For’ This Week’s Show. ; The box sheet for the engagement of the Nashville Students at this: city on Wednesday and Thursday evenings next is now open at Foley’s wheré seats can be reserved without extra charge. The Helena (Montana) Independent of November 10th says of this show : Thearle’s Nashville Students, a collection of young colored singers who have been heard in Helena on previous occasions, played a return engagement last night to an audience that taxed the seating capacity. of the house. The personnel of the company has been materially strengthened this year and the performance was a marked success. There are excellent voices among the Students, and all blended tunefully in, the quartette and ensemble singing: Mrs. Ware, a recent acquisition, is poss-. 8 essed of a beautiful, clear soprano voice a rare accomplishment in one of her race. Her husband proved tobe a good story-teller and his recitation of “Brother Watkins—ah !” was the hit of the evening. The Nashville Students, as at present composed, are certainly the premiermusical organization of the kind that has visited. Helena, and. _ on their next visit will need more com modious quarters to accommodate their patrons. An ingenious Frenchman has obviated the need of keeping lights in railroad cars.to provide against darkness in tunnels, He lights the tunnels. For exaniple, in the Batignolles tunnel; near Paris, electric lamps, arranged iu rows along the tunnel walls, are automatically lighted and extinguished by passing trains, the rims of the ‘car wheels operating the electric switches. ~ The electric lamps are each of ten-candle power, and placed at the height of the car windows, and so serve to illuminate ‘the interior of passing coaches.
