“It’s a funny thing,” said the man
with the bad cigar, who had-been reading day before yesterday’s paper.
“What's that?’ asked the young man
with the phenomenally short coat.
“Why, the way these fellows that
write jokes for newspapers get things
tangled up,” replied the first seaker.
“How is that?’ asked the long legged young man. ‘
. . “Why, look here,” continued the man
with the bad cigar warmly. “Did you
ever read a Dutch joke in the papers
where two Germans are ideas to be
talking to each other?”
“Sure I did,” said the tall “young
man, yawning languidly.
“Well, did you ever notice that every
time the guy that wrote the joke has
them jabbering at each other in broken English? What do you think of
this?’ He picked up the paper again
and after ipa tend a few moments read
as follows:
“LeberwurstHeinrich, vy iss it ven

“Schwarzkoppen—Maypie it iss vonce

No?
“Now, that’s a good thing, isn’t it?” .
went on theeman with the bad cigar.
“If those two Germans wanted to talk
to. each other, do you suppose they
would amble around in broken Bnglish? No; they would spiel it out in
German that they both understand.
suppose you and I were in Germany
‘or a visit and I wanted to tell you

ieither of us could speak or would I

“But that would spoil the joke,” proested the tall young man.
“Hub!” snorted the other. “Some
hings are too bad to spoil.”
And then the incident was considered
slosed.—Chicago Chronicle.
Anecdotes of Evarts.
One summer when William M. Bvarts

of his idol. :
Senator Evarts at that time was beng entertained constantly, dining out
ilmost every night, and as he drove out

evening the farmer was lying in walt

An ftmpronsptu riddle ts attributed to
him here at his country place. One
day in presiding at table with a swarm
of grandchildren about him he asked,
“What is the difference between this

After much futile guessing he said in.

In reply to the question which, ft is
said, metal workers frequently ask,
“What is the strength of aluminium?”
The Aluminium World says that cast
aluminium is about equal in strength
to cast iron in tension, while in resisting compresston it is comparatively
weak. Under transverse strain aluminium is not very rigid, but it will
bend nearly double before breaking.
The tensile strength of aluminium is
greatly improved by forging and pressing at a temperature of 600 degrees F.,
and aluminium alloyed with nickel is
much stronger than the pure metal.

“Beautiful, my dear!”
Phe elderly millionaire who had married the famous heauty regarded the
watch chain admiringly.
“A very delightful binthday present,”
he continued; beaming upon his fair
young wife. “So massive and yet in
such excellent taste.”
“I am so glad you like it,” she observed. “It was so cheap too. Just
think, it cost only $15.”
“Only $15!’ echoed the millionaire,
in astonishment. ‘Fifteen dollars for
this solid gold chain!”
“Oh,. of course it isn’t solid gold,”
she interposed. ‘You could never get
a solid gold chain for that price.”
“What is it, then?’
“Why, gold filled, to be sure.”
“I see,’ said her -husband, stroking
ais chin reflectively. “But why this
sudden streak of economy? Don’t. you
think I can afford to wear a solid gold
chain?’
“Of course you can,” she assented.
“But this one is guaranteed to last

Laughs and Misheps,
What queer things the average person laughs at. If some one slips and
falls or is unfortunate enough to make
person thinksit very funny and taughs
and repeats the affair for a funny story. If sonre one makes an unfortunate
remark accidenflly, his embarrassment is always a theme for merriment.
Women, whoa, are supposed to be sympathetic, are the ones who have the largest stock of such funny stories. They
always seem to be a success. People
love to iaugh at the misfortunes of others.—Atchison Globe,
