TRAN 1SC RIPT. Established Sept. 6, 1830. by Nat. P. Bsown & Co. NSVADA CITY, NEVADA OOx, CALIFORNIA THE BROWN & CALKINS. ra SUBSCRIPTION RATBS.Fifty Cents: Per [lonth. ADVERTISING RATES. Made known on os gan. 17, 1808. A RICH FREETRADE VEU. Hon. John Gray Evans of. South Carolina has struck a wealthy lode of thought that pans out ninety per cent. of pure theoretical ore at every sbovelful, and, possessed of an agile intellect, John never allows the pickaxe of deep thinking to aceumulate rust by ina®tion. He is opposed to any protection for the farmers of the Palmetto State, for the: Yeason, doubtless, that tbrougb protection grangers secure a large share of our markets and receive good prices for their products, which would engender selfishness. iF The Hon. John longs for the silver : age, when farmers will become so unasifish as to consent, with great glad‘ness of heart and pureness of mind, to give the lion’s share of our markets to foreign producers, and be content with . the glorious privilege of using foreign fabrics; that is, provided they have any cash or credit~ with which to purfree-trade ehase. John lifts up the voice of wail and sighs over the departed good old -freetrade days, when the foreign tin octcpus supplied us with tin poor in quality but rich in price. In fact, there was always a large amount of richness clinging to foreign goods as long as foreign firms controlled our markets. The richness, however, pertained mostly to the price. For example, we used to pay 8 and 10 ‘cants per pound for foreign wire nails : through protection we now get better ones for less than 2 cents. pay $2.50 per equare foot for plate glass, which we now buy for less than 50 We might quote further examples, includWe used to cents, all through protection. ing iron, steel rails, binding wire and scores more of fabrics. Mr. Evans also rises to explain thet one of the greatest boons to grange:s would be cheaper clothing through free wool. Of course this would be a colossal blessing, 50 far as it goes, but very unfortihately Evans balts upon the very threshold of pure and undefiled _ benevolence. After our farmers have consented top tax ttiemselves for the support of Geternment and allowed foreign wool raisefs the full benefit of our market without paying one dollar for the privilege, John should also_ask our grangers to raise larger quantities of wool and give it all to sedolen manufacturers in order to still farther reducé the price of wearing apparel. ABOUT CHURCH GOING. The Tulare Register remarks with sorrow that the Oakland Enquirer has stated that people in our day go to -ehurech “to worship the minister rather than ‘worship God.” Then the Register proceeds to vindicate the progréss of the age by saying that the lack of church attendance does not prove the . 4 Four Leaf Clover Watch Charm prevalence ofirreligion, “because there are multitudes who carry their churches under their hats, and who read sermons rather than listen tothem because they are better sermous and more inspiring To these comments the Enquirer replies: This sbows that -the editor of the RegiSter has read the “Enquirer” than they can get in church.” in the same way in which many people listen to sermons, namely, without understandiug. people go to church to worship the What we’said was not that minister, but that.they go without in-. tention or desire to worship anytbing —merely to be entertained by the sermon. Also, it was remarked that in older times, when the spirit of worship . was more prevalent, the sermon was relatively a small matter, and people would go to church whetherit was vad or good, because it was not the principal incentive they had in going. ~ — One Price to All.
