ese THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT ~~ r@reditable manner.-The.play is. highly. inSas “ BARKING POWDER Brown & Calkins, Publishers. r FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1894. “THE BLUE AND THE GRAY.” A Large Audience Greets the Nevada City Stock Company. A full house greeted the first appearance of the Nevada City Stock Company at Nevada Theater last evening, and the pretty military drama, entitled ‘*‘The Blue and the Gray,” which had been selected for the openirg piece, was presented in a very teresting and is founded upon the late civil war. As has been previously stated, the company is composed of p:ofessionals and amateurs, under the management of H: A. Ruyner, who last evening appeared inthe role of George Waterman, a young American, who desp te the entreaties of the South-. ern girl With whom he is. madly in love, jeins the Union army and takes up arm: against the South. Mr. Rayner’s’ general tendition yf the part was good, although in. some scenes he Was over active, ’ gestures} and— movements, —_Miss-— Bessie LeRoy as Maud Bradley, the Southern girl, sustained the part in a praiseworthy manner, Percy Eaton as Soc ry, the drafted Dutchman, who was sinib pinta out for the welfare of his stomach, was ver) good, his cumicalities keeping the audience in good humor and causing them to overlook minor defects in other parts of the play. He also took the part.of Officer Mulgarry. Charles N. Warner as Phili) _Bradley, the spy, made the best of the part George Barton teok the character of Major Banks in a most satisfactory. manner, his representation of the character being remarkably good for an amateur. Emmet Costello, another of the amateurs, made a decided impression as Fred Ainsley, the rebel. Miss Minnette Maltman scored a big hitin her part, the Daughter of the Regiment. Company ©, Nevada Light Guard, had twenty men on the stage during different scones, their appearatce adding ‘greatly to the effect of certuin parts of the play. In the camp scene, and afterwards, when the rebels were about to shoot. their captain, the sudden appearanée of the boys in blue brought down the house. At the cemetery they performed the ceremonies of decorating the soldiers’ graves, both in The singing by the Barton Brothers aud Hahn in the camp scene was a pleasing feature, and the -beautiul tab'eau with which the piece coucluded, in which Miss Alice Caldwell represented the Goddess of Liberty, and Miss Martha Sims aud Miss Honor Steveris rm presented Justice and Liberty, with the’-soldi-rsgrouped jn the foreground” Itt a lappy )iinpression “upon the audience. ‘The performance will be repeated this evening. Notwith-tanding the. cold weather, the Theater was qu.te comfortible last evening, afagt which added much to the enjoyment of the audience, Tarn or gray hair and bad heads, so displeasing to many jeop!e as marks of age, may-be averti:d tor a long time by using Hall’s Hair Renewer. ——— An Unseen Enemy. ay moreto-be-dreaded than_an_open and v pea That subtile and lurking foe, which un ti:e generic name of malaria a eeifertc TOM when it clutches us in its tenacious grasp; i the various forms of chills and tever, biliguy ‘aasittent, dumb‘ ague or ague cake, can only be effectually guarded against by fortifying the syatem against its insidious attacks with Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, a thorough antidote.to thepoison of miasma in the system, and a safeguard against it thoroughly to-be relied upon. “Io the event of a malarious attack, avoid poisoning your system with quinine, and use instead this wholesome remedy, uvobjection-able in taste and for more efficacious than any drug. It turns out, however, that her spinal column was fractured, and Dr. O. M. Schultz, who attended the woman up.to. the moment-of her death, says, from a subsequent examination, it-isremarkable, owing to the compression on the spinal cord, that death did not result instantly. ** When I was called in,” said.Dr. Schultz, “F found the woman had-sustained a fracture of the second vertebra of the spinal coluinn, and the compréssion of the splintered bone against the spinal cord caused complete—paralysis—of—the entire body, . She assisted Mrs. De Noon in running the lodging-house at § Mint aveuue, and the two occupied the same bed. It was a cabinet folding-bed, containing shelves and drawers for clothing in front. Mrs. De Noon was lying up further than I was, with her head resting on her arms, and -received the full force of the blow. I saw the thing coming and put up my hands to brace it up.
