THE “TRANSCRIPT. Eetablished Sept. 6. 194. by Nat. P. Bauows @ Cu. NEVADA CITY, NEVADA (CO. CALIFORNLA Proprietor: SUBSCRIPTION RATES. Fifty Cents Per Month. ADVERTISING RATES. Made known on application. BROWN & CALKINS.WEDNE 3DA\....JAN. 19, 1808. TO TEST OUR TIMBER. A bill has been introduced in Congress, says the Mining and Scientifk Press, to appropriate funds for investigition and tests of American timber The bill starts out with the followin preamble: “Whereas an Z.enormous waste of forest products and incalcuiable loss of life and property occurs from ignorance of the true value and strength of American timber; ard whereas a thorough examination and elaborate tests of our timber have been introduced in the forestry division of ee the {Department of Agriculture, Lut have proceeded very ‘slowly, and have now been entirely discontinued on account of deficient apprupriations, therefore be it enacted, etc., that the sum of $100,000 be hereby _appropriated” for the purpose. It is provided in the bili that not less than 30 per cetit. of the amount appropriated be devoted to the testing of the timbers of the Pacifi Coast. Wovtp it net pay the business men of Nevada City and Grass Valley to build and maintain a first-class boulevard between The present so-called turnpike is dusty in summer, muddy iu winter, and so rough allthe year aronnd as to. break ny horses and vehicles.. Besides, the man who attempts to drive over it after dark takes his life in his hands. fault of the County Supervisors that the road is not a befter one, for the; the two towns? It is no lack the necessary funds with which te pat it in proper shape. The right kind of a road would cost perhaps ten thous. and dollars, but once built it would be worth having and not cost much for its . 4 kseping. With a few men like Fred Z-itler at this city and George Main-. ¢ hart at the other end to talk up the im proven ent and hustle for money, the road would inside of a year become a reality. ARTHUR McEwen, the California writer, is ont against Bryan. Ewen’s desertion of the Nebraskan’s standard means much, for be was one of his most enthusiastic supporters dariag the campaign of '96, and his brillian pen did the most effective work tha was done for Bryan on the New York Journal: McEwen has sinvze discov» ered that the Nabratkan is a shallow fraud and in his usual fearless way has told the truth abont him in a letter to the New York Joufnal under the title of “A Bryan Democrat’s View of Mr, Bryan.” A MAN who has a good deal of exper ience in such things in a down-country county says that Nevada City will never have good streets and the county cannot expect good roads till portable rock-brégkers are bought and kept in use most of the time. He characterizes the present patchwork system as “puttering” and says it is almost a waste of money.
