The California Gas and Electric Co. Absorbs the Bay Counlles Power Co. GREAT consolidation of California electric light, pawen; and gas companies has been effected, by which one large corporation secures a monopoly of supplying light and electric power to fourteen counties in Central California. This large concern is the California Gas _and Electric Corporation and the companies which it has ab= sorbed are the Bay Counties Power Company, the Oakland Gaslight and Heat Company, the Sacramento Electric and Gas Company, the Fresno Gas and Electric Company and the Central California Gas and Electric Company.: The counties in which the great corporation above mentioned has secured sway by purchasing the plants of the other corporations named, together with their franchises, rights of all kinds, etc., are the following: Nevada, Sacra.mento,.Placer,. ‘vote: Butte, Yolo, Colusa, Sutter, Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, Contra Costa and Alameda. The controlling corporation has a capital of $15,000,;000. Eugene J. de Sabla and John Martin, who are both well known by our people and are connected with the Nevada County -Trae-tion Company, are in control of the new corporation as managers. The California Gas ad Electric Corcoran was. originally incorporated with capital stock amounting to $30,000, ooo. Atter Mr. de Sabla returned from Europe last Septem“her the capital was. reduced to $15 §,@00,000. That’ was found] to be sufficient for the purchase of all the properties which the corporation sought to acquire for the purpose of control—. ling the lighting and power of the great territory in Central Californiaincluded in the fourteen counties enumerated. In reality the Bay Counties Power Company, which was the larger of the several corporations that have how just been brought together, has swallowed the others, The manager or executive officer appointed is John A. Britton of Oakland, but the decisions concerning matters of great concern will ‘ rest with Messrs. de Sabla and John Martin. Mr. de Sabla is the president of the Bay Counties Power Company, and the men back of that corporation have control of the new organization. . The negotiations that have just culminated began about April, 1902. From time to time options to purchase were secured at a satisfactory price on the several companies’ properties. Mr. de Sabla went abroad and talked the great consolidation of light ahd power interests over in Europe and in the East. It has been decided to issue to the amount of $10,000,000 five per cent funding gold bonds, to run thirty years. In round figures $8,000,000 of these bonds have already been placed with syndicates and large investors in blocks. The California Gas and Electric Corporation has 1000 miles of pole transmission electric lines, in additien to the} gas and power plants acquired, It-is said by Mr. de Sabla that no electric or gaslight is burning from Chico to Oakland that.is not now controlled by the large new corporation. Colgate, the New York multi-millionaire, is the president; Eugene de Sabla and John Martin, vice presidents, and R. M. Hotaling treasurer. Among the properties acquired are those of the Consolidated Railways of Sacramento. “The general purpose in consolidating,” said-Mr. de is to secure common benefits to all concerned. We seek to reduce the cost of utilities, The principal reductions to be made will be in the price of gas in Oakland and in Sacramento. We do not enter San Francisco and are serving only the interior. Our policy has always. been to put the price of utilities as low as possible and to trust to the increase in consumption thereby induced As fast as we feel warranted in’ making reduc tions in price for light and power we shall reduce. We have Sabla to a San Francisco press reporter, “ for profit. our contracts for furnishing light and power on long terms, Sacramento has a good gas plant. The lady at first. thought she might have been mistaken and that the prowler might be imaginary, so she thought it wise policy to investigate. She had no sooner opened the door leading outside when the rofflan grabbed the lady around the throat with bis hands and attempted to choke her, Mrs. Menhennet uttered piercing shrieks for help which had the effect of frigbtening the despicable fellow, who fled up the street.
