Richards and son, who have been here on a visit to Mr. Richards’ parents, returned today to Tonopab. Geo. A. Legg left thie morning for a business trip to San Francisco, C. Burke, R. A. Marshall, O, OQ. White and H. 8S. Haywood arrived here on this morning’s train from San Francisco. Geo. McLaughlin of Sacramento are rived in this city this morning. E. P. McCulla is down from Washington. N. Barback of Washington {Is visiting the County Seat. Michael Shea is down from Moores Flat, William P, Thomas is quite ill at bis home on Orchard street. David Voss left this morning for the El Oro mive at Maybert. V. T. Erickson of Duluth, Minn., is here on a visit to his brother. W. T. Batler’s children are down with the mecsles at their boma on Gold Flat. A. D.Mason returned last night froma busigess trip to Sacramento. * Bugene Englebright is ill with the measiee. A. Lademan, who has been quite {ll at his home on Broad street, is improving. Mrs. Thomas Bradbury of Allegbany is here ona visit to her sister, Mrs. Richard Bennetts of Lost Hill. Miss Addie E, Clemens, who has been visiting relatives bere, returned this morning to ber home at Ohallenge Mills. Mra. D. P. Bowere and child of Latah, Washington, arrived here last evening on a visit to the lady’s brother, L. E. Armstrong. Mrs. William ‘Giffin left this morning on a visit to {friends in San Francisco. Henry Lane, Fred Zeitler and Alex. Hongell have returned from a duck hunting trip around Marysville. They had a pleasaut time and bagged goodly number of ducks. A mistake was made io this paper yesterday stating that Dr. J. F. MoGovern and wife were among the arrivals here yesterday. Mr. MoGovern’s wife did not accompany him here, William Laird is here from Loomis om a visit. Dan Coughlin of Columbia Hill ie reported to be quite ill. A son of William E. Meservey of Town Talk is ill with the measles. Thos. J.-Torpie retarned yesterdey to May bert. John Eddy, the blacksmith, fering from an attack of rheumatism, North Bloomfield today. Weather Report. The athletic department of the company is gaining in membership and patronage right along and the club is fast becoming a popular place of pastime to a large percentage of our young men who recognize the benefits thus derived from physical culture. The body of the Chinuman who disappeared from Washington last week was recovered from the South Yuba river yesterday afternoon. It is supposed that while crossing over the trail in the dark he lost his footing and was precipitated over the embankmeut into the riverand was drowned. Tomorrow evening a number: of members of Court Garfield, No. 9, Foresters of America, will go to Grass Valley to visit Oourt Pride, as Dr. Troppman of San Francisco, Grand Secreta will be present. At their meéting last night Court Garfield admitted two candidates to membership. Yesterday William Daniel, wo for the past eleven years has been associated with E. T. 8. Powellin the soda works and buildings on the corner of Pine and Spring etreets, sold his intereat to hls partner, who will hereafter conduct the business. . Hurst of this city, who proceeded at once to open up the property in a sys~ tematic manner. The shaft at that time was: down sixty feet, with considerable water at the bottom. Operations were continued throagh the shaft-way for about 100 feet, with the expectation of encountering the east and west ledge. Ae anticipated, the ledges finally came together and the east and west ledge then separated, the east vein dipping toward the east and the west vein running direetly west—something rarely experienced in mining operations. ‘The ledge which is now being worked is over three feet thick and free gold and salpharets can be seen all through the ore. The event will be held at Odd Fellows Hall on Friday evening, February 65th. Yesterday afternoon a meeting was held at the home of Mra. J. M. Hadley on Main street, when steps toward arranging for the big night were taken. Sub-commiteees have been appointed operated upon the left knee of Captain F. A. Gourley, the well-kno«xn mining . man, and removed therefrom portions of divensed bone and particles of dead tissue. The operation was performed at the home of Mr. Gourley on East Broad street and was very successful, the patient now doing nicely. A namber of years ago Mr. Gourley had the misfortane to severely injure the member, and ten years ago Dr. Lane of San Franciseo operated apon the knee and afforded the necessary relief, but the constant using of the limb, coupled with an accident received while boarding a steamer at Cape Nome.a few months ago, tended to affect the knee and after suffering much pain with it be again had it out open and the cause removed. It will be some time yet, however, before Mr. Gourley will have much use for his leg. Warrants Issued SacRAMENTO, January 18.—Governor Pardee today issued warrants for the requisition of W. L. Simpson and J. R. CH1oaco, January 18.—Members of Chicago’s police force, numbering 800 and including patrolmen and officers of rank, have launched an orgenization to be known ae the “Policemen’s Progressive Association.” Its principal object, it is said, will be the protection of its members against charges made by criminals and thieves and on evidence given by the latter to a local graft investigation committee. The charges have resulted in the discharge of policemen, and they aseert that their dismissal on such testimony is unjust. The Graft committee was denounced, ee Domestic Tronbies.
