P. LOCGHRID’+E, General Mauager. . . An Honored Chinaman. Queen Victoria, witb the prince consort and her family, attended in state tlie opening of the great exhibition of 2851. While the choir was singing the perbly robed suddenly emerged from fore the throne. No one knew who he was. He might be the emperor of China himself come secretly to England to share in the great doings. The lord chamberlain, greatly perplexed, applied to the queen and the prince for advice and instructions. He was informed that there must be no mistake as to the stranger's rank and that it would be best to place him between the archbishop of Canterbury and the Duke of Wellington. In this position of honor the Chinaman, with magnificent dignity, walked through the buildings to the delight and amazement of all who watched. Next day it was discovered that he was the keeper of a Chinese junk which had just cast anchor in the Thames and which everybody was invited to visit eon payment of a shilling a head. London's Whistles. A boy was charged at a London police court the other day with blowiig a whistle in such a way as to cause three policemen to come toward him The fact that such a thing fs possible suggests the questions: How do the police distinguish between a cab whistle and a police whistle? What is there to prevent any one from blowing a whistle in such a way as to call a pnliceeman? A representative of the Graphic who put these questions to a high official of the city police learned that in the matter of attending to whistles, as with his many other duties, the policeman ‘uses his discretion. Any shriil whistle . will attract a policeman, but such a taurant or any place where people congregate and cabs are wanted would not bring a policeman to the whistler. The } same whistle blown in precisely the same Way in the middle of the city at ; midday would bring a policeman on the scene at once.—London Graphic, . The Absent Jack. . The wife ¢f a Washington street . merchant is very fond of roses, espe. clally of the brilliant varieties. By . way of reminder she said to the hus. band the other morning before he , started for business: ' “T gee, my dear, that Jacks are be. . coming cheaper.” . “That may be true,’ said the husband absently, “but I have known men who would have been willing to pay $100 for one to put with the two already in uSsir hand.”—Indianapolis Nevada City Transfer Co.
