“How much do you expect to spend

“About half as much as I shall.”-:
Judge.
In the south of France stilts are 4
necessity to the people, who: posts . .
shepherds.: They must aieeee Its in
order to oversee their vast flocks of
sheep as well ds to pass through the
bogs. :
These shepherds—men; .women and
children—walk continuously» on: stilts
from.siz to eight. feet. high. These
stilts are. merely fastened to the. feet.
Sometimes the stilts. have , uprights
reaching as.far.as the knees and bound
firmly to the legs.
Generally these shepherds and -shepherdesses carry long poles, which they
can use either as balancing poles or’as
supports—very long canes, as, it were—
reaching to-the.ground. They become
so expert in stilt walking that it is no
unusual sight to see a. shepherdess
striding along on stilts that raise her
fix feet above the ground, with her
balancing pole strapped to her back
and her hands busily knitting socks for
husband, son or brother.
The complete unconcern with which
these country folk make their way
along on stilts is astonishing. One
might ‘almost say that the children
have stilts given to them instead of
cradles.— Washington Star.
Salad Days.
Quite the simplest interpretation of
thé trite phrase “salad days’ refers it
simply to the fresh green quality and
character of such vegetables as are
grown for salad and which miay, be
taken as, typical of the raw inexperipkbow, but lie loose and have places
ence of youth. Probably it was used in
this connection by Shakespeate'in “An;
tony and Cleopatra:” i
My salad days,
When I was green in;judgment.
Another and very different derivation
links the expression with salle, or sad
dle, the block upon which in olden.days
schoolboys were birched. In this form
the words are allied to the “pen’orth of
salad oil,” for which, on All Fools’
days, boys were sent -to the saddler'’s
shop, where they often met with a
warm reception.
It is just possible that the term had

Books are no substitute for tala.
They come out of falk and go back into
‘talk. We doubt if reading alone ever
madé “a full man.” It has been said
that reading is thiiking with some one
else’s~head, but talking is thinking—if
we may borrow a simile from the moto
car—with ‘two head puwer. As a bOokworm is to the man of the world, so is
the silent thinker to the talking thinker. ~The’ man who does not talk is u
stranger upon earth. He does not know
his fellows, and they do not know him
and those we do not know we cannot
greatly’ like. “Little do men perceive
' what solitude is and how far it extend
eth, for a crowd is not, company, and
faces are but a gallery of pictures and
talk but a tinkling cymbal, where there
is no love.” Yet a man may do heroic
deeds and never talk at all in our sense
of the word, and he may be a learned
man and never express an opinion on
any. subject of the first consequence.
All the same, we agree wit!) Bacon
that, inasmuch as he is shut v himself, “closeness doth impair a:. little

Row a Bird Dresses.
As bird fashions do not change, twe
suits a year are quite enough for most
birds, but they need to take great care
of them. Each separate feather must
be cleaned and looked over and the
useless ones pulled out. These feath
ers.are not packed close together, yuv
between filled with air. When a bird
.~Wants to gef warmer he lifts his feath
ers so that these air spaces may be
larger. But if his feathers are tan
gled or wet and dirty he could not
raise them, and soon he could not
keep the head in his little body and
would of course die.
