THOMAS CASE PCSTPONBD.
Judge Fllon Appoints. Attorney Mason to
Conduct the Defense.
Wa. G. Thomas, the Grass Valleyan
charged with resisting an officer, was
to have been tried in the Superior
Court on February 6th, but this morn‘ing Jadge Nilon put the case over till
a week later, ‘Thomas had sent a note
from the jail to his honor. saying -that
he was without a lawyer and had no
money with which to hire one. He
urged that A. D. Mason, who had been
one of the lawyers who defended him
so successfully in the rape case a few
weeks ago, be appointed to look after
his interests. Thomas: was brought
into court at ten o’clock. The Judge
recited the circumstances and then
named Mr. Mason as the lawyer. That
gentleman said he had an important
case coming up next Friday that would
be on trial fora week, and it would
take all his intervening time. He
would have no opportunity to prepare
to conduct the defense of Thomas between now apd February 6th. Judge

The Parson and the Printers,
Pastor Phelps of the Methodist
church was surprised beyond expression when he read in the TRANSCRIPT
Saturday evening that he was to preach
yesterday morning on “How the Printers Were Forgotten” and in the evening
on “What They Did to Me.” His surprise was intensified when he saw
the information verified: in the: charch
notices of yesterday morning’s papers.
He then recalled that he had forgotten
to furnish the newspapers with the
usual preliminary announcement of
what he intended. to talk about, and
saw the editors had supplied him wi'b
topics. He took, the pleasaniry in
good part, as he. always tales such
things. Before beginning the morning
sermon he cracked a joke or two at the
newspaper men and their proverbial
toughness, explained. what they had
done to him, then proceeded to. preach
upon converts and faith. *
