The whole company— was seeming to notice only the brilliancy of the attack. Presently, however, the turned upon Mr. Whistler and, in a voice trembling with suppressed anger, said: “Jimmie, do you know that you brutally insulted me tonight?’ ; “Yes,” replied the artist ¢houghtfully. “Well,” continued the host, “I heid my temper while there were others than our own countrymen present, bui do you know what I shall do if ever you speak to me like that again?” “]’ll grab the nearest water bottl and smash it over your head.” The rest of the company sat quite still, horror and dismay in their hearts, while their angry host glared’ across the table at his antagonist. After a few seconds Mr. Whistler saig-in a tone bluebéttle, in spite of not baying a nose, lower ! tabte or smell sufficiently for their purpose, and often in a high degree, without being able to point to any special organs of these senses in their bodies." Where There’s a Will There’s a Way. finds out .a piece of bad meat animals, contrive to see, hear, and: to suppose they are devoid of a gense because we are unable‘ to: dist cover it is frequently: to confess our ignorance. “One of those things which go to show that where there is a will there fs a way is well exemplified by a happening in a certain southern city,” said a well known former railroad man. “A man before his marriage had purchased a beautifully located lot in the city cemetery and paid-$100 for it. After awhile he married and some ten or twelve years afterward .died. and was buried in the aforesaid beautifully located lot, and his grave was carefully tended for awhile by his widow. When the big fair came off in Chicago and all the world was en route to that Mecca the widow took a notion she must see that show. As a result of a long cogitation over ways and means she had the body of her deceased busband exhumed and railroaded fifty miles away and reburied at a cost of about $75, when she sold the cemetery lot for $600 and had a good old time at the big world’s fair. Somefoxhotnd” kind has taken, perhaps, osé on 150 years. _He is essentially, above all others, a dog of utility,. and as the pointer has always been looked upon;as one of the chief helpmates of the man who loves to take his pleasure behind a. well broken brace of dogs, a pair of barrels and straight powder, it stands to reason that that man has called fm all ‘his ingenuity and all his knowledge of breeding to provide himadapted for the sport that is provided for him. ‘Therefore in some places iu America, where the plains are so vast, a very fast and wide ranging pointer is required—one, too, with “bird sense.” Where true ranging, a good nose and gtanchness on game are to be found embodied in one single dog, there, per haps, have we found the perfect ani mal, and a retrieving pointer at that. As in other breeds of dogs, there are all sizes and sorts of pointers. The short»headed, csoddy shouldered and often’ weak thighed and cow hocked pointer has gone by the board. It stands to reason that, although the cart horse can gallop, he cannot gallop with the thoroughbred, the clean neck ‘ed, ‘oblique shouldered, deep hammed, live racing machine. Half a day of real going will knock up the heavy headed, loose throated pointer. He has had to give way to the more elegant quantity; but even such as he should not be too small.—Illistrated Sporting News. gelf with a-sporting dog that is best b cheapest and’ at the same time, most comfortable way to travel.
