Suasta VALLEY, Jan., 22,—Within the last ten days there have been large movemente of cattle in thie section, Over 2000 head belonging to Joseph Howard, O. Swanston and Louis Gerber, have arrived in the valley for shipment to California points. The high price of bay and alfalfa io the Merrill district has caused cattlemen to leave that part of Oregon for California, In the Klamath Baein about 2000 head of cattle belonging to Gerber, Swanson and others are lefr, Alfalfa hay has gone upto $15 a ton and cattlemen are compelled to seek cheaper food for stock. Found Dead. Brprorp, Ind., January 22 — The body of Miss Sarah Schaefer, teacher of Latin in the Bedford High School was found ina carriage house today. She had been assaulted and robbed and the body mutilated. The appear with her asssilant. Miss Schaefer came here from Elkhart, Ind., a year ago and was much admired. The movement originated with a number of business men who have the welfare of the Guard at heart, and has the endorsement of the officers of the Second Infantry Regiment. Sacramento was the Brigade headquarters until former Governor James Budd, as Commanderin-chief of the Guard, changed it to Fresno to pay a political debt, it is claimed, For Seymour. SACRAMENTO, Jan, 22.—It is stated that Colonel H. I. Seymour, for several years in command-of the Second Regiment, is the choice here for the office of Brigadier -General, to succeed General Muller. Fisher and John Fitsgerald late yesterday afternoon arrested aman who gave the name of Fred Miller, but whose true name is knowa to be-Ogoar N. Kiamip, a safe cracker and burglar, with a record in the east. ‘Ohiet of Police Sullivan received a letter from Secret Service Agent McOlue of Little Rock, Ark., stating that a strange crook had been arrested: there, and that a cipher letter dated at Sacramento and addresses to ‘‘Slim” had been found upon him. ered, the letter stated. the writer was in Sacramento, and requested “Slim” to.bring his safe blowing. outfit to this city, and binted at diamonds being in sight,. When searched at the police station the officers found on Kiamp cipher letters, which go to show he is the man who wrote the one found by the Little Rock~ authorities. In 1890 Klamp shot Major George Heinzman of Ohicago, while committing a felony in the latter’s house, and was in turn shot by Heinzman’s son. He was captared, convicted of assault to commit murder, and was sentenced to Joliet from which institution he was released in November, 1897. Old Headquarters Majority. . neer resident of this city, who had besn ‘a great sufferer and very near Death’s door many times during bis long illness, flnally answered the sammons at 7:25 o'clock this morning and passed away peacefully. Death resulted from minere consumption, & years ago and which slowly sapped his Iife away. Mr, Davey left England and came to America at the age of nineteen, and for a number of years mede his home at Negaunee, Mich., where he married his first wife, After leaving the mines there he went to Colorado, where he filled the position of superintendent of some copper mine for two years. He came to Oalifornia in the year 1879 The deceased was among Nevada City’s oldest residents, having come to this city about 25 years ago, and has resided here continuously ever since with the exception of two years, during which time he was engaged in mining at Virginia City. Up to the time his health failed him, several years ago, Mr. Davey was a hardworking, industrious miner, and it wae by too close and steady application to his chosen profession that he contracted the germs of that dread disease which resulted in bis death. He always took a great interest in politics and in the advancement and growth of this community’s interests he was a willing worker and advocate. For several months he filled with credit the office of Oonstable of Neveda Township, being appointed to fill the vacancy made by the deatb of the late Wm. Scott. He ran as as Independent candidate for re election, but was defeated. i He was 3 native of Devonshire cdanty, Eogland, aged 55 years, aud leaves a wife and two daughters—Mre. Frank Grigeel of this city, and Mrs. Fred Brinkman of Forbestown, the latter being children by a former wife. A brother,Wm. Davey of Anthony House, Pleasant Valley, also survives him. Mr. Davey was quite prominent in fraternal circles. He was a charter Prince Albert Lodge, Sons of &t. George; also a member of the I. O. O. . &. fraternity of Virginia City, Nev. The funeral will probably take place ou Monday afternoon. To Assist In Degree David E. Morgan and L. Attkisson went over to North San Juan this afternoon to essistin conferring the Royal Arch degree in the Masonic lodge at that place this evening. Mrs. Apperson. San Jose, Jap. 22.—Mrs. Randopb W.
