An interesting enumeration has been given of the sources of color. From this it appears that the cochineal insects furnish the gorgeous carimine, crimson, scarlet carmine and purple lakes; the octopus gives sepia—that is, the inky fluid which the creature discharges in order to render the water opaque when attacked; the Indian yellow comes from the camel; ivory chips produce the ivory black and bone black; the exquisite Prussian biue comes from fusing horses’ hoofs and pigs’ blood; blue black comes from the charcoal of the vine stock; Turkey red is made from the madder plant, which grows in Hindoostan; the yellow sap of a Siamese tree produces gamboge; raw sienna is the natural earth from the neigh. borhood of Siena, Italy; raw umber is an earth found near Umbria; Indian ink is made from burned camphor;, mastic is made from the gum of the mastic tree, which grows in the Grecian archipelago; bistre is the soot of wood ashes; very little ultramarine, obtained from the precious lapis lazuli. is found in the market. A Rigid Sabbatarian. A Canadian university man is enlivening his home circle with the following story: He was touring in Scotland last summer. One Sunday morning he put his little hammer in his pocket (he is an amateur geologist) and, strolling, out upon the hills, began to chip off such specimens of rock as interested him. A native passing by looked on With a frown. “Sir,” he said, “do ye ken yer breakin’ more than stones there?’ “Breakin’ the Sabbath, eh?” said the young Canadian, with a laugh, and, to appease the Scot, he put away the hammer and walked a little way with him. A turn of the roud revealed the ruins of a castle. “What castle is that?” said the stranger. “It’s noo the Tay." was the severe reply, ‘to be speirin’ sie things.’”—London Outlook. Free Press. Any reliable time saver i; eagerly welcomed by tbe modern business man. Probably tbe most forceful illustration of this condition of things in recent years was the enthusiasm with which the fountain pen was greeted, It seemed to mean the eaving of so much time and annoyance forso many people that its sale was simply pbenominal, Bat the fountain pen was not by apy means perfect and its users soon discovered that the bother was only concentrated, instead of being dispensed witb. The finest fountain pen «ould write indifferently well as long as there was ink init but, when that gave out busy man had to stop, anscrew au inky cap, baut around for a filler and the particular ink recommended by the manufacturers of that particular pen and so on through @ long process of annoyance. Tbe manufacturers of the Quaker City Self-Filling Fountain Pen have overcome ali this bother aud produced @ practical writing tool which ie as easy to use as if one were simply writing with the filler needed for the old pen. There is nothing to unscrew, nothing to squirt, nothing to lose or get out of order. Its construction is simple and substantial and the operation of filling it s0 simple that you wonder nobody thought of it before. It ia merely necessary to dip the pen _ pressing it slightly, lift up as usual and go on writing. Its capacity is no lees than the bothersome kind. We feel that we are not over-praising the Quaker City Self-Filling Fountain Pen when we saw that it represents the cme of fountain pen acblevement.
