These ‘legends are told by the Bliqula and Klivakuetl tribes of British Columbia. In this story you will notice the remarkable resemblance tothe Greek Phaethon. Once upon a time the mink played grace hoops with the ducks, and the mink and the mink proved the best marksaid maltreated him and finally broke his bow and said: ‘‘We do not care to dlay any longer with you. You do not sven know where your father is.’’ Stung oy this “taunt, mink hastened. to his mother. She told him his father was in she sky ; it was he who carried the sun ayery day. Mink determined to visit ‘him, and with his new bow shot an arcow into the sky. The arrow stuck in ‘he sky, a second arrow hit the notch of the first, and finally a chain was formed ~}reaching from the sky to the eerth. Up this ladder mink climbed and arrived at ‘. nis father’s abode. His father was glad +to see him and permitted him to carry ‘lthe sun in his stead for one day: He must ascend slowly behind the mountains and not go fast lest the earth should burn, Equipping himself with ais father’s blanket and nose ornament, mink set out. All went well till just before noon. Wink became impatient at his slow srogress, began to run, and to kick aside -he clouds-which obstructed his path. . de set fire to earth, and men, in order to ss¢ape the fearful flames, jumped into she ocean. Part of them were transZormed into animals, part into real men mals before). Poor mink.was thrown from heaven into the sea below, but was rescued and carried home. _ The legend of the visit to heaven oc‘ars in many of the tribes, but with ther animals than the mink. Many tories told of the raven are also told i mink. He, too, obtained fire for his ribe, obtaining it from the ghosts who iad it in their possession. Mink stole he infant child “of the chief of the ‘hosts and would not give it up tillthe irebrand was given him. Farther south, along the coast, the an becomes a niore important mythoogical figure. It is said the Salish ot he -interior butn food, blankets and ‘ther property as an offering to the sun. Jome of the important legends refer to she murder of the sun, and to the origin sf the new sun and moon. From the language and from the legends it apyears that many of the coast tribes conperson, or at least as two brothers. One story runs: ‘‘A long time ago there was 1 man named Momhanate, who was dlind. As he was unable to endure the yeat of the sun, he went fishing during -he night. When the day began to lawn, his wife would go down to the seach and call him home before the sun ‘ose. . One day, however, his wife slept ‘oo long, and it was already daylight when she awoke. She called to her husyand to return as quickly as possible, yut before he reached the shore he had melted. Then the sons determined to ivenge their father’s death. They made . chain of arrows and climbed up. They illed the sun with their arrows, and then thought, ‘What shall we do next?’ Lhe older one said, ‘Let us be the sun,’ and he asked” the brother where he wanted to go. The latter answered, ‘I will go to thenight; you go to the day.’ And so they did. The younger brother secame the moon, the élder the sun. ’’ As the salmon is the great staple of “subsistence from the Sacramento river yorthward, so with it are connected the zreatest number of superstitions. Messrs. Lewis and Clark, mentioning the capture of the first salmon at The Dalles in 1807, an occasion of great rejoicing, itate that in order to hasten their arrivil the Indians, i to: custom, jressed the fish and cut it into small yieces, one of which was given to each jbild in the village. At the mouth of he Columbia the first salmon could be aten only by the medicine men. The ‘aking of the first fish of the season was -verywheré the occasion of a feast. The alton dance was performed, and the nticipations of plenty lightened every. seart. ‘The earlier fish could not be obained at any price by a white man uDlogs it were first cooked, lest he should ‘pen it with a knife instead of a stone --+ out it crosswise. The heart was _alvays roasted and eaten lest a dog. should at it and no more salmon would be aken, On the ripening of the salmon af the schools by that time jered certain. ‘These superstitions have ‘n most of the tribes nearly died away, she feasts Have ‘been discontinued and the salmon dance neglected.— Portland German papers assert that gas pi made of paper are a success, Manilla through molten ‘may be of any desired length, receive a x } ng. = Ts “Fine.
