That Ola Pashienes Quality In‘ Said to Be Out af. bate, Friendship is said to be out of date. We certainty have not much time te spare nowadays, even to reflect: on what the rush and hurry and bustle of modern Hfé are costing us. Now and agin: however, there is Borne-in upou us the sad’ realization. of the losses we sustain ax ave tear and scramble’ throngh what we new call fe. Aud is hot one of these the power of estabtishIng close friendships? It. is a sad reflection, but the more we think of it the truer we shall tind it to be, that we no longer have time to knit togetherthose bonds cf true friendship and affection which bound our predecessors together andi made life sweet to them. We are always in a burry. rushing ? here and there. We mect and. know } many people in crowds and yet never have time to nnderstand them. to give them or gain from them sympathy. We can scarcely spare an hour that is unconnected with some form of entertainment or seme business matter to those we enll our closest! fricnds. Letter writing has been redueed to {ts least common denominator as time presses on us heavily. and we have no pursuits that we can share with eur se called friends that enable us to study each other's characters. Friendship, in fact.-has become a mere term with the general run of people.—Chicago Ree. ord. “The Sun Do Move.” We have all heard of the Rev. Jas tained his congregation with a sermon upon the proposition that “the sun do move.” Jasper proved his contention to whe satisfaction at least of himself and incidentally suceeeded in getting this ‘name into the realm of what might be called bufto-science. _ \ There is aa old adage to the effect that a certain class of mortals are adficted to the habit of rushing in where angels fear to tread, and this theory of the’ mobility of the sun, which keeps tropping up from time to time, affords the mest. striking proof of the accuracy of the aforesaid adage. General J. Watts De Beyster is not a fool by any means. On the contrary, he Is generally reputed to be a man, of more than ordinary ability, and yet she constant recurrence of the sun theory has apparently somewhat addled him. Now. when that occurs to an able man, what would happen to some poor fellow whose intelligence was ever so little’ below the normal? It ts horrible to contemplate. General De Peyster admits that until in the accepted theory that the earth moves around the {mmovable sun. At about that time, how: ever, while riding with a friend the latter suggested that a German professor, Dr. ©. Schoepfer, had maintained in a public lecture in Berlin, tn 1854, the truth of the Tychonian theory, which is “founded ‘oh the supposition . that the earth stands still in space, that that the planets and other members of system revolve about the sun.” The unexpected turn of the conversation set the general a-thinking, and he sapiently observed to his friend, “If SchoepferSis right, the literal truth of the Bible is established.” His com: panion acquiesced, and after the ride the general began seriously to study the problem, which up to that day had hever In the slightest ‘degree interested [. him. The result is seen In a recent publication in which the man of war i and letters occupiés about: 80 pages of well printed paper In endeavoring to demonstrate that Copernicus and. bis successors did not know. what they } were talking about and that “the sun do move.” it is perhaps worthy of note that the. Rev. Jasper’s name Is bot mentioned in this pamphlet of General J. Watts De Peyster. ‘This whole thing is very amusing and for that very reason ought to make appropriately frivolous reading. for the heated term. . &. ey Poor Walter Raleigh! When he made his exit from this troublous mundane sphere, via the ax and block, kindly supplied by. order of that humane sovereign, Queen Elizabeth of England, he certainly had as much to answer for as‘ the avernge mortal of the: sterner sex. Now, however, an English paper ‘comes along ‘with a new accusa, tion against Englands most gallant courtier. This journal declares that Raleigh introduced ‘nto Irctand “an agricultural product whose baneful ef fects might cet've for as grand an epic as that founded on the mythical apple of discord.” This mysteriously alluded a se PALLENTS Ria TRADE seeetine. bia never have known aught save H. sfena—1 don't tank! that Aageuns iv Satire Aa Routt say she is, J}: Mary—Probably.not. but . notice that . ’ land. because thie people thére liked world anid proceeded . to cultivate thei. . me they became the principal! artiof diet, and “when” the erop fails there is uaturally very great ‘distress the Emerald Isle. Records of Wars Prove That General Sherman's View Was Right. During the Franco-Prussian war there were over 200 battletield ghouls eaptured aud shot. Most of these. were actually hegives, but it is a notable fact that, a great number of persous had blacked their faces and hands and attired themselves in oriental costume, so as to be? mistaken for’ the former. It 48 sad to relate that a considerable number of these phanderers were women and-that during: the ‘campaign French jewelers were constantly reeeiving visits from peasant women, who brought gold and silver watches, diamond rings and pins jfor sale. One woman, long after thie “¢ ampaign ceased, visited a certain jewcler three times a week, each time bringing‘some valuable article with her, such asa gold cigar case, a gold watch anc so on.
