Circulating Bogus Checks of the South
Yuba Water Company.
One of the boldest and most systematic schemes of forgery ever attemptedin this part of the State came to
light yesterday when a counterfeit
check for $14 and bearing date of Janaary 19th, purporting to have been
drawn by the South Yuba Water Company on the Citizens Bank of this city,
was presented for payment at the
Grass Valley agency of that Bank.
The check is lithographed in handsome style and has the U. 8. revenue
stamp duly printed upon its face by
the Government. Across the top are
the words “South Yuba Water OCompany Employes’ Pay Oheck,” and it is
made payable at the Citizens Bank here
I; is signed by George W. Enright as
Superintendent (there is no such a man
connected with the Company) and is
made payable to and endorsed by W. F.
Ford. It was sold at a grocery store
in Grass Valley.
The Company issues no “Employes’
Pay Check,” and all its checks for
labor, etc., are signed by John Spaulding or W. F. Englebright, or in the
latter’s absence by J.F. Colley.
There is no knowing yet how many Miss Mabel Hughes
of the fraudulent checks have been
put in circulation, but there is evidently a scheme on foot to flood this
section with them. ‘
