The attendance was large, and two candidates were initiated and two applications for membership received. The work of the new. ritual: was aleo exemplified. \ The newly-elected officers: of Ohattanooga Oorps, W. RB. O., were installed thie afternoon. The ceremonies began shortly after one o’clock, and were well attended. A grand time marked the occasion. i At their: meeting this evening Oustomah Lodge, No. 16, I. O. O. F., will confer the.cecond degree on a candi date, Very Unfortunate. It will be unfortunate if the proposed exhibit at the World’s Fair by the University of Oalifornia has to be abandoned through lack of funds. The defalcation of Secretary McKowen: may render such abandonment imperative. This is just the time when every showing that is possible should be made for Oaliforniu, Its educational affairs are of especial importance. Commissioner Filsher, on a recent trip to St. Louis, succeeded: in getting a fine site for the display, but the complication, and perhaps disguet, that re. sulted from the -discovery that the University bas lost pver fifty thousand jdollars throug’ theft of its official, may cause the abandonment of the proposition to show to the peoples of the earth assembled, the high educa{tional methods in vogue away out in. this land by the sunset sea. May Be Appointed. ; Ht is reported among military men et Sacramento that there is a probabil‘ity of the headquarters of the Second Infantry being moved to Marysville. They believe that in case Governor Pardee appoints Colonel H I. Seymour to succeed General Muller as Oommander of the Third Brigade Lieutenant E. A. The Spiametion Committee met at Grass Valley last evening. The various committees made their reports. Short speeches were mads by the various members. William H. Martin, chairman of the supervisorial and promotion joint com. mittee reported. He.told of his visit with Supervisor Weeks to the. meeting ofthe Sacramento Valley Association’s convention recently beld in Sacra act with Nevada in looking after the fruit display from this county. Mr. Martin told of his visit to San Francisco and of his interview with the World’s Fair Commissioners. He had securéd'the promise of a large quantity of valuable specimens from Nevada county mines, now in possession of people at San Francisco and elsewhere. He epoke of the courthouse cabinet that is being prepared, and said that Nevada could send to -St. Louis one of the best mineral exhibits ever made in the county, the total expense, covering a period of eight months, of which approximate $2500. Supervisors Weeks and Miller were beartily in favor of any movement that would tend to advance the interests of the county. It was announced the Promotion Committee had about $375 on hand, but it would take about $600 to issue the Souvenir booklets. Dr. Jamieson suggested the deficiency could be raised by giving a masquerade ball at Grass Valley, and the ide& met with unanimous approval The chairman named the following committee to work up the proposition: Dr. Jamieson, W.G. Lord, 8S. T. Jones, I. Haas, Fraok Dulmaine, W. E, Parsons, G. E. . Mainhart, B. 8S. Rector, J. J. Jackson, 8. Lee Leiter, The Supervisors were invited to act with the committee. [Death Casts Its Sable ‘Montle Oer a Well‘Known Miner, Yesterday afternoon at four o'clock death closed in peaceful sleep and ended forever the patient sufferings of James Bonney, at the home of his mother, Mrs. J. Bonney, Zion street, on Piety Hill, Miners’ consumption, contracted within the mines while running the dreaded Buriéigh machines, the direct cause of, and hastened to his grave another of their lung-deatroying victims. _The-end was not anexpected as. he had ‘beén afflicted for months and during the past.several days it was plainly seen that the seal of death was upon his brow. James Bonney was one of the best known miners of this county, having worked for yearsin the mines of this and Washington districts, It was along the river that he toiled most of the years and where his lungs become affected. Coming to this county when @ mere boy with his parents from the East it was in these parts that be grew to manhood, and sbhoose as his avocation the lot of a miner. In his life work he was considered & good, practical miner, and readily found employment. Ofa quiet, unassuming disposition and of the strictest integrity, he was esteemed and respected among those he dally came in contact and labored with for years, and many there are in this and the upper eection of the county who will hear with sincere and profound regret the passing of ‘‘Jim” Bonney. Deceased was a native of Pennaylvania and aged 47 years. One son, James Bonney, a mother and three brothers are left bereaved, The brothers are Andrew and George cf this city and Charles of North Bioomfild.
The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at two o’clook under the auspices of Oourt Garfield, No. 9 Forestere of America, of which fraternal order he had long been affilfated with. He was also a member of Samaritan Lodge of Odd Fellows of Washington and members of that organization will atteni the funeral in @ body. Religious services will be held at the Oongregational Obuchb, Rev. J. Sims to preach the eulogy, it Won't Work. The Gorman scheme to cripple the Republican party of Maryland by disfranchising the negroes of that State seems to be constructei in the shape ofa boomerang. It is modeled after the law popular io North Carolina and Miasissippi by whose “grandfather” clause illiterate and. penniless whites are given the ballot while it is refased to the same class of blacks. Sucha discrimination is so shocking to the people of the North of all parties that, should Mr. Gorman realize his ambition and be nominated for the Presidency, it will deprive him of some tens of thousands of votes of reasonable Democrats. ——_ ———‘+ 22», —______ Tbe landing of the cabla made manifeet care, thought and toil. think of that? Doe's gift of between $500,000 end $700,000 for the erection. and endowment of a librdry was probably inspired by. the examplé of Mre, Phoebe Hearst who supplied the Bernard plang and who donated the firet butlding of the series of structures for which those plans provide, A State appropriation provided for the third building now io course of erection. If a new building in accordance with the Bernard plans can be provided each year, in a decade the housing of the University will undergo a wonderful transformation.
