Wil0 GO WRONG
WO notable cases have occurred within the past month
or two of trusted employes in certain cities who have
proved dishonest. In both cases the dishonesty was
the result rather of opportunity than of intent. The men who
fell were weak rather than
resist temptation,
wicked. They were unable to
It has been said that to every man comes
an opportunity. which if seized will carry him to success, and
it may as rightfully be said
comes as well,
that the opportunity for evil
Men who are strong either by nature or
education resist while others, with no criminal intent, fall.
Experience has shown the wisdom of reducing these opportunities for wrong-doing. In the two cases now before
the public the chances for theft were made actually inviting.
Careless methods of book-keeping and equally careless auditing made robbery easy. The trusted employes yielded to a
temptation which to them proved irresistible and are now
suffering the consequences.
It is impossible to draw the lime between weakness and
dishonesty, and those who have stolen, no matter what the
. mmetive;-éxce very properly regarded as criminals. Yet everyOne realizes that ‘=.difference exists and that the man who
yields to a temptation is not of the same order as the professional thief. Everyone feels, too, that a certain amount of
blame rests with those who careléssness or indifference made
the temptation possible.
The two recent defalcations prove the need of better busness methods. There should be no “trusted” employes.
Every man occupying a position involving the handling of
momwey should be watched and his office hedged about by
safeguards to reduce the chances of dishonesty. The honest
man would welcome these precautions for they would lessen
his responsibilities and make his work easier: the dishonest
man would by force be kept in the right path, and the
weak man would be saved from a temptation that otherwise might land him in the penitentiary.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Jan. 26—A large,
ferocious dog, belonging to William
Barr, entered the family home Saturday -night {carrying the head of a
young child in its mouth, which had
apparently been jerked from the
child’s body while the latter was yet
alive. It was reported to the Coroner,
who went to Buri’s place, which is
four mites distant from the center of
the city. The police are of the opinion
that Barz wes afraid to report the case
because the dog belonged to him.
Barr is a German and unable to
speak English, and is also unfamiliar
with American Coroner customs. He
did not koow what action to take until
told by friends this morning.
A further examination of the child’s
heed leads tothe belief that it was
probably not more than one year old
The Coroner’s theory is that it was
abandoned on a lonely common and
and frozen or benumbed into unconsciousness by the cold; that tbe dog
found it in this condition and tore it
to pieces. The commons are covered
with snow today, preventing the fluding of the body.
