Another system of mining of: even

Mining. Gold in quartz was first. discovered in Grass Valley by a German.
in September, 1850. Not realizing the
value of the quartz found, the finder
sold it for $b. It afterwards brought
$100, but the pioneers were so enveloped in mining the placers that: little
Or no attention was paid to ‘the discovery. Iu October of the same year
& man nemed McKnight, who camped
on the summit. of Goid Hill, discovered
what has since been’known as the Gold
Hill be So rich Pike Mere vein, fhe
ore yielding $50 to t that. the
news of the “discovery spread .as
rapidly throughout the State as the
news service then in vogue would admit, and thousands of men flocked to
the scene of the wonderful find. ‘Since
that-time Grass Valiey has muintained
her position as the leading quartz mining district of the State,
. Shortly after this gold in quartz was
discovered in Nevada City, aud.the exwhen.it. me known that veins existed througbout the couuty in profusion. In 1850 the Empire:mine of Grass
Valley, which has worked almost continuously ever siuve, was located, while®
in 1851 the Providence, Merrifield and
Gold ‘Tunnel veins were located iff this
city. From that day. to the present
time quartz mining has been a permanent industry in this county. Like
every other industry it has fluctuated.
It bas had its periods of depression aud
prosperity, but never has there been a
time when it. failed to yield the precious metal. {nthe early days there
were many drawbacks and disappointments on account of a lack of wiedge of the mining and milling of gold
ores, But'as these difficulties disappeared, a larger measure of prosperity
attended the efforts of the miners, so
much so that in 1857 the. mines: of:
Grass Valley were in a flourishing condition while in Nevada City great improvements were observed. From 1869
to 1862 the mining industry was again
in a very yg Sage condition. But in
1866, per J. Browne’s report, there
were stamps, crushing 71,420 tons.
of ore, with an average yield of from
$80 1o $35, in Grass Valley, and 142
stamps, crashing 14,200 tons of ore,
averaging $25, in Nevada City. ‘We are
sorry that through lack of space we are
prevented from giving a deseription of
the geological formation of the county,
as such description seems absolutely
essential in conjunction with a study
of the various ore bodies. But the editor’s mandate is absolute though sometimes unbearable. It will be seen from
the descriptions ofthe various mines
printed recently that the mining industry of Nevada county was never in
4 more prosperous state. With steam,
water and électricity available as a
motor power, and “other conditions
equally favorable, Nevada offers inducements for investment which no
other county in the State can offer.
