A PIONBER WOMAN GONR,
Aged Mrs. Rosalie Mignel Passes to
the Mysterious Beyond.
Mrs. Rosalie Miguel died this morning at the county hospital where she
had been since Thursday. She was
over eighty years of age and a native of
Chile. oo
She came here in the early fifties and
wasin her younger days one of the
handsomest women in the mines. For
many years she has resided with her
husband, Don Miguel, in one of the old
shanties on Coyote street near the Kelsey ravine fill.
Of late years she has been growing .
feeble and this week she was so low
that it was found advisable to remove

Those who saw Miss Waldorf a year
ago in “Ingomar” and “the Hunchback”
have only the pleasantest recollections
of the talented lady and her company
which latter has been waterially
strengthened for the present tour. —
On Monday evening they will render
the beautiful Shakesperian comedy,
“As You Like It.” Almost every. actress, great or small, has had aspirations for the role of Rosalind. Some
have attempted. it but with indifferent

“Atlin is the coming gold center of
Alaska,” says Jobn B. Burns, who is an
old California miner and claims to
have worked some of the best claims in
Sierra county for years. Burns is in
San Francisco now. In November last
he met with an accident to his eye.
He was driving a nail and it flew out
and struck him in the eye. The point
entered the iris below the retina but
did not destroy the sight. He can see
at various angles, but his direct vision
is impaired. He came down from
Alaska for treatment of his eye, but he
expects to go back to Atlin.
“That district,” he says, “is the poor

Ground Paying a Grain of Gold a Ton
Worked at a Profit.
In British Columbiaa placer claim
averaging only one grain of gold to
the cubic yard—or less than five cents
& ton—worked by the hydraulic process
pays the owners $10,000 a year net profit.
The Virginia City Chronicle commenting on this factsays: In Sixmile
. Canyon there are numerous gravel deposits that showa gold value ef 25
cents of more tothe ton, but on account of the great depth to bedrock
and the fact that it is full of deep
cavities, termed pot-holes, a clean up
after washingdown several thousand ton
of gravel could only be done at considerable cost,as it would be necessary
to pump the water out of the bedrock
cavities,
That the extensive gravel deposits
worked in Sixmile Canyon will be
worked at a profit some day there is no
question of doubt as the gold they
contain represents millions in the
aggregate and the water pressure for
washing it out by hydraulic process is
close at hand in the creek and is of
sufficient volume if penstocked to
furnish ‘the pressure required for installing a hydraulic plant, the slope of
the creek bed representing a grade of
nearly 500 feet to the mile.

which he read with telling effect.

The case of Wm. McKnight against
the Pine Hill Mining Company is on
trial in Justice Green’s court this afternoon. Plaintiff was working at the
mine when it shut down. Superintendent Rosertthal left for San Francisco saying he wished McKnight would

again later. The superintendent returned after several weeks and put, the
miner on again. In three weeks the
superintendent became disatisfied with

But It Is Soon Cured by Hood's
Sarsaparitia.
Yes, Scrofula, ifanything, may be called
the advertisement of foul blood. It is the
scourge of the world — offensive, painful,
debilitating, stubborn and well nigh
unendurable.
Outward applications do not cure, they’
only drive the difficulty to new’ quarters.
Emollients may palliate, they cannot
abolish the evil. There is but one sure
way out, and that is to eliminate the
taint from the blood.
There is one remedy that can effect this,
ahd it is the only one that, so far as we
know, has almost invariably succeeded —
even where the system has been poisoned
by long years of taint, and the ravages to
be repaired are tremendous. That remedy
is Hood’s Sarsaparilla. Read this:
‘éMy daughter was afflicted with impure blood. There were running sores
all over her body and they caused her
much suffering. We tried medicines that
were recommended as blood purifiers,
but could not see that they did any good.
A friend told me about Hood’s Sarsaparilla and I began giving the girl this medicine. The result was that she was perfectly cured after taking a few bottles.
