Established Sept. 6, 1860. by Nat. P. BRowN & Co. NEVADA CITY, NEVADA ©O., CALIFORNIA BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors MONDAY.. ..2 “SV. JAN. 3, 1898. — THE CHRONICLE ANNUAL. The San Francisco Chronicie’s annual, issued yesterday,is a remarkable pages with arichly illuminated cover. Those pages are‘nct stuffed with paid write-ups of private and business undertakings, but are devoted to. an auing the past year in the various great Andustries of the State.Very properly ‘a large share of space is devoted t the 0 erations of the gold miners of whom the Chronicle is a staunch and 8talwart friend. Among its general comments on the progress of the various Nevada county: Nevada county holds the lead among the mining counties of the-State While there has been gieat. activity . , throughout the min=zral belt generally. during the year 1897, Nevada is not in danger of losing its place as the banner mining county and gold-producer cf California, for it has had its share oi the general activity and a liberal degree of the reward whi¢h has fallen to the lot of a larger proportion of gold-seekers in California this year than during aay previous year since the “days of old, the days of gold, the days of Fortynine.” The old gold-producers of the county have yielded uninterruptedly through the year. Many new mines have been opened. Several important years past for the want of capital to 0 en them systematically aad profitably have changed hands, and development work is in progress. Among such properties is the Delhi, near North Columbia, which for years .after the stoppage of hydraulic mining was the mainstay. of that mountain town. When it -suspended operations for the want of capital to provide a suitable plant to successfully treat its ore,’ the town nearly collapsed.. Now it has passed into the hands of a company that: has the means and determination to develop it thoroughly, and work has been resumed for that purpose on its lower levels. This is an illustration of what is being done likewise with other properties. New stamp mills are going up inall parts of the county, and these will soon be adding to the ‘general output-of gold. The power developed by the Electric Power Company has been a great aid in the mining development of the year. A notable feature in this year’s mineral ou,ut of Nevada was the shipment of 5)0U tons of sulphide from the Spenceville district to San Francisco for the manufacture of sulphuricacid. © ===. Reduction works and a twenty: ton matte smelting furnace are among the new industries established during the year in Nevada City and they are working very successfully. AN EXCHANGE very truly says that a good town is one in which the miners spend money with the home merchants, ' the laborer spends’ the money earnéd with the local tradesman, and the feeling and good will of every citizen is in sympathy with her industries, where every article that can be is bought of This is the spirit of reciprocity between business men, merchants, tradesmen, printers, laborers, and it makes things lively, too. The town prospers and grows, and above all it is a pleasant place to live in. { A SPEEDY HOUSEBOaT. Move) Craft Designcd by a New Yorker For Winter Cruising. Thomas A. McIntyre of the New York Yacht club is going to have a novel kind of houseboat for the, use of his family in southern waters ‘this winter He-has taken the stern wheel steamer George Purdy, originally built for transportation use at Jacksonville, N C., and put it in ‘the bands of a com pany, to he olt-~ = bi Bie react” . “oye ~* ih ney oeam. Moreover, after a few yearsin the navy the bluejacket seems to become possessed of the odd idea that he is really doing nothing } aboard ehip to garn his pay, that the perpetual scurry in‘ which he is kept from all hands in the morning until pipe down at night is really not work, . and with this quaint notion he also acquires an exceedingly exaggerated idea . of the terrific amount of grinding labor . : a@ man has to perform in order to gain’ a livelihood ashore.
