Bell was here from Auburn yesterday. : Mrs. Dana Harmon is down from the California mine. W. F. Pascoe of Fort Bragg went to Camptonville today. Phil Bradley and Wil! Organ went to the Spanish mine today. Ex-Senator C. W. Cross arrived this morning from San Francisco. Miss Ella Northey lett today for Mrs. George F.-Jacobs, who has been seriously ill for some time, is now improving. Mrs. E. J. Olsen returned to Wasbington today after a few days’ visit al the county seat. : Miss Mary Bristow was here last night en route from Auburn to her -home in-Cherokee. : Dan J. Stevens of the Union Hotel and his bride have gone to Los Angeles on their wedding tour. W. E. Crossman and James A. Miller of San Jose, stockholders in the Mountaineer mine, are here. Mr.and Mrs. P. R. Shipley of Oakland weut to Camptonville to-day and expeet to remain there permanently. L. Reedy, the express messenger, who has-been down with the grip, goes to San Francisco tomorrow to recuperate. Miss May Buffington has returned to Berkeley to resume her studies at the State University. This is her last year. David Hutchison of the Phenix mine left today for San Diego in the hope of benefitting his health. His son James accompanied him. Francis Boggs, who resided at this city for severa: months last year and made many friends during his stay, is here with the Waldorf Company. ‘Miss Florence Hamilton, who has been ill at Alameda for ‘a month past, returned on Saturday evening’s train and to-day resumed her position as teacher in the bigh school. Judge Stanley A. Smith of Downieville was here last night on his way home from Susanville where he presided in the Superior Court last week during the trial of some water right Lassen county was disqualified to sit. George Hernandez, the comediar, who though a comparatively young man has for years been a prime favorite with the people of Nevada City. before whom he has appeared at intervals with some of the best dramatic organizations that have been here during the past ten or twelve years, is with the Waldorf Company. —-—_—_+-cee LODGE AND CHAPTER. After the installation a fine collation was served at the National Hotel. _———~+ ee +——__— Laid to Rest, The funeral of the late James A. Weeks Jr. took place this afternoon from the schoolhouse at_ Rough and Ready. The young man who had previous to the time he was stricken down with consumption been employed by . a San Francisco wholesale firm, was born at Rough and Ready in 1867 and graduated from the Grass*Valley public schools. The seven months old daughter of C.R, Cole of Bridgeport was buried this afternoon from the home of M. Provines at Grass Valley. To Raise the Adminisirator’s Pay. In the Assembly Saturday Devoto of San Francisco offered a bill placing . public administrators on a salary in. stead of a fee basis. Salaries in the several cities of the State are fixed as follows: San Francisco, $4,000; Alameda, San Joaquin, Los Angeles, Santa Clara, Sacramento, Butte, Nevada and Sonoma, $3,000; all other counties $1,500. At present. the Administrator of this county gets $400 a year. The Weather Bulletin. This morning the sky was overcast with clouds for awhile, and many predioted the approach of a-storm. The signal service builetin was, “Fair to-. night and tomorrow.” if WRIGHT RESIGNS THE SPEAKERSHIP. He: Anticipates the Action of the Assembly. And Does Not Wait to be Kicked Out of Office. Special to the TRANSORIPT. SacRAMENTo, Jan. 30th—Howard E. Wright today tendered his resignation as Speaker of the Assembly. In a list showing the number of miners employed in the various counties of this State, publish in the Mining Press, the number employed in this county is given at 574. J.Z. Hough came cver from Poker! Flat Tuesday. He reported that there are about five feet of solid snow on the northern ridges. The prospects for a fine water season, he says, were never better. An alarm of fire was rung Wednesday forenoon about 11 o’clock for a blaze on the roof of John Irish’s house en Jersey Flat. The fire w:ssoon ex-! tinguished. The fire caught from sparks from the stove damage was slight. Miss L. L. Alexander of San Jose has been admitted to practice law in the! Supreme Courts. She isa shorthand reporter in Justice. Court. She does not intend to practice law. Miss Alexander, who was bornat Reese ravine, about oue mile from Poker Flat, Sierra county, is the daughter of James Alexander, formerly of Downieville, and a niece of Dryden Alexander of that town. Since tf removal of the PeterKelley building on Main street, the sidewalk in front of the lot his become, on account of the warm sunshine which pervades that quarter during the day, a favorite place for those who enjoy the soothing effects of a sun bath. A bench wus placed there the other day, and one of our wits has dubbed the spot “The Park.” A number of quaint iascriptions have been painted on the fence, one’ of which-says, “A sure cure for rheumatism aud la grippe. Teeth extracted by sunshine, etc.” On auy afternoon a number of patients may be seen there taking the cure. — + eoFrank Eilerman’s Estate. The will of the late Frank Eilerman was filed today. The value of his estate is estimated to be less than $6000. . It consists of $1900 ip bank, a mortgage and two pieces of real estate. ‘The saloon property he leaves to his son Fred, his home on Broad street to Lizzie and Francis Reb. John Boggs, State Senator from Oolusa county, died at ‘the Palace hotel this morning of grip. He had been laid up but a short time. Senator Boggs was one of the leading Democrats of the State and was well known. He had held various positions of honor and trust. TIPS FROM TRUCKEE.
