"Lovers of good acting will tonight have a rare apportanity of seeing one of Shakespear’s: brightest comedies presented at the local theater by a thoroughly capable and conscientious troupe of players headed by winsome Janet Waldorf. There will be no amateurs,no “sticks” in the cast. Every . ~ lady and gentleman of the company is a finished and: experienced actor, and the play will be properly costumed and staged with due regard for the historical requirements. The performance will be a refreshing and inspiring change from the mediocre class of entertainments that often drift this way and there is no doubt but the discriminating public will show their appreciation of Manager Jacobs’ enterprise. in providiug such an attraction by fillingthe house. = Tomorrow evening on the occasion of their farewell appearance Miss Wal-' dorf and her people will give us the entrancing romantic story of “Romeo and Juliet” as told by the immortal bard of Avon. : Seats are now onsale at Foley’s for both evenings. REDDIK T0 START AGAIN, Plenty of Water to Resume Operations in All Departments. The Reddik drift mine on Selby Hill, two miles and a half from this city, will be started up again tomorrow morning after having been idle most of the time for two months past. Superintendent Skewes has a force of men getting things ready today to resume operations in all departments and _the fall force of some forty men will once more have employment. The shut-dowii was occasioned in the first place by a failure of the water supply at the head of the Central ditch and later by the blocking of that ditch by snow. DBATA OF MRS. MeCULLOUGH Passing of a Pioneer Woman of North San Juan, Mrs. Robert McCullough of North San Juan died of dropsy yesterday after an extended illness. She was one of the pioneer women of that section, having lived there for some thirtyfive years. She had the esteem and friendship of the entire community because of ber many noble qualities. Five or six years ago her husband died. A number of grown children survive Mre McCullough. All but one of them— the eldest son being in the Corean mines—reside in Bridgeport township. A Woodmen’s Entertainment. The Carson News of last Friday says of the gentlemau who will address a public meeting to be held at Pythian Castle Wednesday evening under the auspices of the local camp of Woodmen: “A great treat was given the Woodmen of the World and friends who were present at Odd Fellows hall last evening. Prof. Meakin of Salt Lake City gavea fine address upon Progress aud Fraternity interspersed with elocutionary gems by~different authors chief among which was “Ernst Faithful” by C. C. Goodwin. He also sang Scanlonff’s “Swinging Song” which was splendidly rendered. A short musical, program was pivén by home talent. We can heartily recommend the Professor as one of the most versatile and entertaining of lecturers.” -_——~-70e Viewing Old Scenes Again. John Bennetts, the newly elected Assessor of Monterey county, is here visiting his aunt and cousins, Mrs. Mrs. Richard Tremaine and family. He is receiving a warm welcome all around. Mr. Bennetts used to be a fireman on the Nevada County Narrow Gauge railroad aud was & member of the Congregational choir here. ‘ + 2 oer 7 ee Fraternal Visit Postponed. The local Degree ot Honor -has_postponed its proposed: visit to Grass Valley from next ‘Thursday evening to the spight of February 16th. The postponement is due to the number of ‘counter-attractions here this week. oe « +00 Visited a Hvarauiic Mine. A number of the gentlemen of the “Waldorf Company this afternoon visited the Gravel Hill hydraulic mine, . It. was their first view of this method of mining. ’ (i “San Francisco, January 27, 1899. Iealled upon to record the flight of another gentle soul from our midst. A pioneer of Nevada county—one who made his individuality felt not so much by the strength of his character as by the strength of it—has been called to the bosom of Abrabam; and by that I mean to say that he has gone ‘where all the good go when the spirit leaves the body. Perhaps some do not believe this. Ido. ee Simon Furth;in bis 74th year, was called away on the 25th pre and all that remained of his mortality was con. signed to the grave today. I knew the gentleman quite well. Asa little boy Tremember how often he would pat me on the head and say a kind word or. two; and as a man the warm grasp of his hand has found a responsive thrill in my own. It was in 1855 that I first met Mr. Furth. He was then a member of the firm of A. Block & Company, clothiers: and general outfitters of men. Mild in friends rapidly, and a friend once made he never lost. _ It is rather ditfcult for me to deseribe Mr. Furth to those of your readers who did not have the pleasure of his acquaintance. Can you imagine a . man who has been successful in life, . retired from the cares of business, and yet has taken a deep interest in the affairs of his friends, without having a dollar at stake himself, unless, permaniier, sott-spokenin speech, he made ‘th frrasprassible &. School Patrons’ Association and the District Conference of Stewards; also takes an active part in the work of the Epworth League and writes on religious and educational topics for several magazines. How he found relief is best told in his own words: “Some weeks ago my brother heard me say something about indigestion and taking a box from his pocket said, . evening from San Francisco. ‘Try Stuart’s Tablets.’ Idid, and was promptly cured, Then I investigated the nature of the tablets and became satisfied that they were made of just the right things and in just the right proportions to aid in the assimilation of food. I heartily-endorse them in all respects, and I keep them constantly on hand.” j27-80-f1-3-6-8-10 © et OO DOWNER AT THE BAY. _. years it was supposed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treat ment, pronounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and therefore requires constitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. It acts directly onthe blood and mucous surfaces of the system. They offer one hundred MAKE A TEST OF STUART’S DYSPEPSIA TABLETS.
