Senator Netson of Minn. made an
able speech against the Vest anti-expansion resolution, in which additional
proof of our right constitutionally to
govern the Philippines as colonies, was

people of those islands the life and
spirit which will enable them to enjoy

Ir would seem to be wise for some of
those who are working themselves into
a frenzy of opposition to the administration’s Philippine:policy to wait until
such a policy is announced. The Presideat hasn’t asked anything but the
ratification of the treaty of peace, which
transfers the Philippines from Spain to
question of their future open. That
question will not be decided by the administration, but by Congress. Excitable persons may escape appoplexy
by remembering these facts.

Senator Haw ey has forwarded to
the town clerk ef Hartford, Conn., in
accordance with law, a sworn statement
as to the cost to him of his re-election
to-the Senate, which is as creditable to
him as it is to the Connecticut Legislature. It shows that Mr. Hawley
spent no money, except for postage,
and that less than $3 was spent for
that.

reached 1,192. Owing to modern precautionary measures the death rate
from accidents is constantly decreasing while the number of miners employed has increased . .

Ir Senator Quay had never done anything else to deserve re-election, and
he has done much, he ought to be reelected as a rebuke to the.tacties astapted to defeat him.
