Jim Townsend, editor of the Bodie Miner, and well-known all over the coast as “Lying Jim,” says that the employes of the: Tesla coal mines declare there are “spooks” of dead miners at work there, and that many of the miners have seen the ghosts laboring in the stopes and drifts, taking out as much cdal as though they were being paid for the work. é Miners are very superstitious as a class, and when a series of accidents happens in a mine, they attribute it toa “hoodoo,” and immediately “spooks” . begin to appear to the workmen, generally in abandoned portions of the mine, and all sorts of queer things occur ~/ which are laid to the “spooks.” ‘There is no class half as superstitious asthe general run of miners, unless, perhaps, it be sailors. There has never been an accident in a mine where there hee-been-less--ef-life-or-injary to any one, but there were several ‘miners who had presentiments that an accident was to occur, and often after an accident there will be found miners who will declare that some queer sound peculiar, apprised them of the fact that an accident was to happen. Stories have beer told of miners being selected as the objective point of a fatal avcident. by the flame of their ‘ candles pointing at them; where a miner has been killed by accident—caves or premature blasts—and shortly before the event the flame of his candle was seen to bend over asthough struck by a slight draft, though there was no draft whatever, and point directly at him. If the miner saw it he merely turned a little pale and kept on with bis work, believing that he was doomed and that no power on earth and no action of his could delay or turn aside the inevcitable catastrophe. Miners have even gone so far as to guess from the action of the flame the severity of the acci. dent. Ifthe flame merely pointed at the miner easily and gracefully it meant an injury more or less severe. If the flame was persistent in its pointing, the workman expected serious if not fatal hurts. But if the flame pointed at him and seemed to reach out at him as though affected by a ‘blow-pipe, then he said good-bye to his friends and told them to break the news as gently as possible to his wife. = Engineers in the big hoisting works of the Comstock mines declare that they can tella day or two ahead when an accident is scheduled to take place, There will be groaning sounds given out by the immense engines, and parts of the machinery will squeak though fairly bathed in oil. When they are unable to eradicate these Bqueaking sounds with the ordinary engine Inbricants they feel certain that an accident willoccur. Many old Comstock engi‘neers declare that this is true, but that they kept their months shut because they knew they would be laughed at by the superintendents as superstitious fools if they said anything. It is likely that if'a man could have a chance to talk with some of the Tesla coal miners after an accident he would discover Some who knew it was going to take place, who was going to be injared or killed, and all about it, and tell why, too. Jim Towsend tells how a “spook” made things interesting in the Consolidated Virginia mine on the Comstock once and the miners were pretty well awed for a while, until the “spook” was caught going through a miner’s lunchbucket one day. The alleged “spook” was immediately hit on the bead with a pick-handle,and the miners’ luncheons, which had been disappearing for cline pass and was badly burt about the head and } although no bo were broken. = wus descending the pass by aid of a ro when th broke. .
