om THE TRANSCRIPT. icciuseas every evening except Sundays and Legal Holidays by BROWN ‘& CALKINS. SET en eal THURSDAY -_ A MATTER OF GUBSSWORK. Estimating the Gold ‘and ‘Silver Output of the Country. The San Francisco Chronicle says: Estimates of the mineral output of the peveral states in which mining is a pro minent industry for the year 1899 are in order. According to custom, the Director of the -Mint has given out a preliminary estimate of the production of gold and silver in the United States ‘during the calendar year jast closed. Comparing this estimate with statements made by other computers of the precious metal production of the sev eral states in which they respectively reside, oné cannot avoid noticing the disagréement in the figures. Take, for example, the gold and silver production of California. The Director of the Mint estimates the gold produced during 1899 at $14,952, 392, as against $15,637,900 in 1898, or a decrease of $684,518. The statistician of the Mint in San Francisco places the yield of gold in 1899 at $15,000,000, as against $14, 438,601 in. 1898, an increase of $562,199, Turning to the returns of the silver output, the same disagreement is noticeable between the figures of the Dircctor and the statistician. The former puts the yield of 1899 down at $1,896, 363 ‘and that of 1898 at $830,448; the latter credits the State with having yielded only $636,000, last year and $415894 the year before. While neither may be correct, it must‘be apparent to every one conversant with the mining industry in California that the Director’s estimates as to silver are certainly nearer the true mark than those of the JAN. 4, 1900 BRIEF MENTION. sinor Notes and Comments of Local Interest. JELLycoN is a scientifically prepared statistician. © An analysis like this shows how little reliance can be placed on official figures when they deal with our gold and silver production. The Government keeps a corps of statisticians to gather data and compute general results for its own purpose and the information of the public; but when these results are analyzed they resolve themselves into the products of a system of guesswork upon which we can put just as much dependence as our faith in the ability of the guesser goes.
