Melvill§ Atwoed, the consulting mirting engineer; ‘Of: San: Francisco, was the first expert ‘to assay ores from the Ophir mine, and he tells the experience as follows, says the Call: “In June, 1854, I owned the Gold Hill mine in Grass Valley, and during that month Gus Harrison of this city came through . from Virginia City with some samples of ore-from_ the Ophir which he gave toone of my men and which J found upon examination — to be rich in. silver, Harrison gave such favorable accounts of the territory from which the ore came that I induced my, secretary, Judge Walsh and Joe Woodworth to visit the locality and instructed them to bring back as much fof the ore as they could carry on horse back. They made the trip and returned with about sixey pounds of ore which I assayed and found it to run about $800 in At the end of that week a German who worked for * me went up to Nevada City and told the story of the assay, and a lt of men—George Hearst among the nymber—fellowed Walsh andWoodworth on the second trip, and the excitement then commenced. ‘That was the first teat made of the ore from that, property, and the beads from that assay are now in the mint in this city properly attested.
