Gravel Mines,‘A well-posted hiniek: man suggests that many gravel claims in Nevada county that in yeare past were worked by the hydraulic: process, could be ‘made to pay well by drifting and having a mill to crush the gravel, At the Harmony drift mine, near this city, a {en-stamp mill is kept in opera tion steadily and crushes 120 tons of gravel per day, at a total cost of less than $3,000 persmonth, which includes wear and tear of mill, water: power, screens, quicksilver ahd é ‘labor. Tt actually costs oily thirteen cents’ per'ton to work the gravel, a No, 12 screen ie used in the battery. With a twenty mill it would cost, to work 240 tons, tee an'nine cents a ton, ‘This is cheaper and better, it is claimed, than hydraulic mining, and would suggest the opening up and working in this manner of more gravel niines throughout the county, which are ‘so situated that the building of impounding dams for hydraulicking would be hardly pravticable. 5 oe fe The. Shamplon’: s New Mill. Tie balance -of the. machinery for the ‘Champion® Mining Company’s new fortystamp mill has arrived. here and is now being hauled to the site of the mill, As yet the framework of the mill building is only partly up, but the timbers are all framed and the millwrights are hurrying the work of getting them up in place. The work of placing the machinery. will begin aoon, When the mill,is-completed it will be one of the best in the State and with the thirty stamps that are now dropping will give a large crushing capacity. i _Fare to the Ice Carnival. During the Ice Carnival the fare from Colfax to Truckee and return will he $3.50; feom here-to Colfax and return, $2.25, making the fare for the round trip from Nevada City, $5.75. Quite a large number of people in this vicinity have expressed ““$ heir intention of attending the carnival, It is understood that the Knights Templar will have a day set apart for. some kind of a demonstration and that an: cffort will be madé to have every member of Nevada Commandery attend. will also goto Truckee about that time. The specimyns weighed about seventy nds, and were brought to town and deposited at the Citizens Bank; The quartz is white-and is literally filled _w with bright, ‘yellow. gold. 1t is the opinion of some-who have viewed the specimens’ that they will yield considerably over $700. The ledge from which, the apecimens were taken is about fifteen inches wide and the strike was made in the shaft at a depth of forty feet. “It is believed that more of this rich quartz will -be found, although ‘the find yesterday may have been only a pocket. The Neversweat, however, produced some . very-rioh-quartz-when the mine was workéd several years ago, one lot of ore taken out : spphee ’ . been made: on ‘behalf: of William Nichole, . convicted of ‘larceny and sentenced to be placed in the Preaton School until at~ taining his majority, In the effort “to. a out it was contended by his lawyers that the act by which the school was established Was.unoonstitutional by reason of inequality ions an adult could be imprisoned in the . ’ county jail for six months only, while a minor could be sent fora long period to the. reformatory. Respecting this Justice Mc~ Farland says: ‘It is trae the term of de-. tention at the: Reform School may be made greater by the judgment of the court than ‘the term of the imprisonment in the County Jail, or in the States Prison, for the same offense would be, but it cannot be said that the punishment inflicted ‘is greater than could be put upon an adult for the same of-. fense, The object of the act is not punishment, bat reformation, discipline and education, There is no doubt of the power of the State to make and enforce provisions tor’ gold-laden-sand into-a-screen-bopper, where: it is shaken and forced along a spout which feeds the amalgamators. The scene of the operations. is. the mouth of the American river, where for yearsthe sands have been washed from the placer mines which were stopped several years ago, These tailings are said to be rich in gold, bat the trouble has been to provide apparatus for removing it. The river at the point noted is said to be filled with sand, from which the mining craft will. take hundreds of dollars’ worth of gold every month. General Tolinan, the originator of the scheme, is a pioneer miner, and thinks there is no donbt of its success. He came to California in 1848, WATER GATE BLEW OUT. Two Employes at the Mountaineer Mine Caught by the Strong Stream. The water gate at the Mountaineer mine blew cut yesterday morning about 9 o’clock, and the strong stream of water caught John Stévens and ‘another employe and pinned them against the mill for several seconds, No injury was sustained by either man, but both were thoroughly drenched, As soon as possible the water was turned off-and-before any--damage had .been. done, Today the breakage was repaired and tomorrow everything will be im running order again, The Mountaineer has been pumped out to the lowest level, where work was suspended some time ago, and yesterday mornga full force of men started to work. Of late there has been only a small force of mca Working in this mine, but it is the company’s intention to carry on more extensive operations. ‘‘Wae have used Hood’s Sarsaparilla and Hood’s Pills for a number of years and they have given general satisfaction. The Supreme Court does not agree that the provision had the effect of turning the reform school into a penitentiary, ‘‘When a boy is thus transferred,” says the court, ‘she receives a commutation of sentence, and when discharged is released from all penalties and disabilitiés resulting from the offenses or crimes from which he was committed,” On these grounds the application fur a writ of habeas corpus is denied. o> Protect Your Head This cold frosty weather, J.
