The Board of Supervisors of San Francisco have passed resolutions calling upon cur representatives i in Congress to use every effort'to secure the passage of the bills introduced by the-.California._Miners’ Association. Sacramento county’s Supervisors, on the other hand, have passed resolution~ protesting against the passage of any bill favoring the resumption of hydrautte~min-}ing or the appropriation: of -public money for building restraining dams, Sacramento. is and hae been for. many years deriving a large trade from Nevada and other mining counties; in fact we. believe her revenue from the mining sections today is much greater than is received by San Franciavo from the samié source;-—The action of the Sacramento Supervisors is not calculated to maintain the business friendship that has sv long existed between the wholesale firms of that city and the merchants and people of the mining communities. If measures intended for ‘our benefit and improvement are to be opposed by the people of a county that we are andhave beén:‘paying tribute ‘to, it would be advisable to transfer this patronage to those who, recognize the importance of the gravel mining industry gind are willing to help ‘pecure needed legislation.. The people of Sacramento are doubtless honest in “thei: convictions regarding the resumption of hydraulic mining, but their prejudices in the matter have calloused their reasoning faculties to such an extent that they are often unjust and unwise in their treatment . Lewis $10, W. Newman $2,50, Truckee of a section of the State which, under the . ] Lumber Company $11.63, W. J. Loofborconditions that the miners are ‘striving to. tow $240, W. F. Wilkie $150.75, J. L. secure, would for years to come add life. Lewison $100, Cotton Bros. $10, Daniel and wealth to the business interests of Sacramento and the State generally, and without material injury to public or, private property. The Capitalist Passed Away Early Yesterday Morning. John W. Coleman, the well-known capitalists, died in San Francisco yesterday. Mr, Coleman will be remembered by aime of the old residents ofthis city, as he “visited here in the early days, He afterwards married Miss Julia Pierson, who lived here for some time and who was a particular friend of Mrs. George E, Turner of this city. Many years ago Mr, Coleman was interested in mining at Grass Valley, His death was unexpected, as he had apparently been in fairly good health up to Monday night. Monday afternoon he complained of having slight stomach trouble. It is supposed death was caused by heart failure? He was a native of Kentucky and 59 coveived years. of. age. wo.children,.Miss. Jessie and Harry, survive ln, Mr. Coleman came to California. in 1853 and soon became an important factor in San Francisco financial circles. -He was at one time prominent among the members of the San Francisco Stock Exchange. It was. : under his administration as President of the Board that the present magnificent building in which the sessions of the board are held was planned and erected. At the end of his term as President Mr, Coleman made preparations to retire from the .busy. life of a ‘broker. and to enjoy the wealth he had acquired. He however, was.identified with many enterprises at the time of his death, beiog President of. the Oakland Gas Light und Heat Company and Vice-President of the Oakland Consolidated Street Railroad Company. Prospects Well. — Hugh Dundon, Superintendent of . the Live Yankee drift gravel mine, near Grangveville, informs a TRANSCRIPT reporter that they have crossed the channel and have started to run up stream in the channel. The gravel prospects well all the way, some pieces of coarse gold as big as the end of a man’s thumb having. been taken out. The tunnel is in 700 feet. pwn ‘oe Notice to A. 0. U. The strike was not in the main channel, which, however, is looking better than’ ever, and Superintendent Jacobs says there is every indication of a rich gravel mine beipg developed.
