He Likes the Heat on His Head, But , le Tries to Keep His manin Cool, es ity of the negro race for enduring heat thas never been fully tested. Am accident related by a dairyman living: oD . the outskirts of the city seems to bear 1 out this assertion, He has a young negro boy who looks after the cattle and does chores around: the place. The only effect that the heat produces in his case is a desire to slumber. The dairyman. had a young calf in the barn}~rd, and as the sun was pouring in on the poor animal -his wife sent “Carlina” out to turn the calf loose, so-that he could seek a shady spot. After waiting an hour for his return the housewife went to the barnyard to investigaie. There she found both boy and calf curled up in the hot and stifling barnyard. The ealf was dead from the effects of the. sun, but the boy was slumbering peacefully by its side, says the Jacksonville (Fla.) Times-Union. _ While a negro can stand any amount of heat on his head, he loves to cool his heels. It is acomimon sight in the winter to see a negro boy on a frosty morning with his head bundled. up to keep out the cold, and at the same time walking unconcernedly along’ the frosty ground in his bare feet. One of the hottest places in the city on a hot day is at the lumber wharves of the Florida-Central and Peninsula railroad. When the men knock off for noon they frequently take a nap with their faces upturned to the rays of the blazing sun; at the same time they get their feet under the shadow of some friendly lumber pile. ne 9 > New Engine of Corporal Punishme _ Introduced in Seotch ie Schools. is Tt has often been wait that the capacd je Pe v The Extraordinary Vhyage of an Ocean Liner in Trying a . Good Lamber at. reagonable rates, this country to iearn the real circum-} stances of the war. When questioned; she spoke freely of the sympathies of her countrymen. «@& “The people of Belgium,” she said, “have been quite divided in their sympathies in regard to the present war, and, strangely enough, the division is racially quite contrary to what might have been expected. There are two distinct races in our country—the Walloons, of Celtie stock, whospeak French, and the old Flemish inhabitants. The latter belong to the same race as the Dutch—that is, they are Germans, and they speak and write the Dutch language. Now, one might expect that the Walloons would favor Spain and the Flemish the United States, for it was the latter people who suffered so severely under Spanish misrule. But, as a matter of fact, the Flemish were so long ruled by the dons that. they finally. became imbued with Spanish ideas and they stand to-day as a distinct party hostile to your “govern ment. The more enlightened ' Walloons; on the other hand, are equally firm in their friendship for the United States. ‘ “The cleavage is along religious lines. The Flemings are clericals— that is to say, they support the ‘domi-. nation of the Catholic church, while the Wallootis-are anti-Catholic in religion—you. will find not more than 2,000 or 3,000 Protestants in all of Belgium—but Catholic in religion and Catholic in polities are two very different things among us. It is the liberal, anti-Catholic, the so-called doctrinaire party, which ‘is friendly to the liberal, democratic government of your country. “Since the outbreak of the war there has been a growing sentiment'among us—and I helieve in other parts of Europe—in favor of this country. At first only two:papers in Belgium, one of these a workingmen’s journal, expressed themselves as hostile to the Spanish interest, but since then the whole liberal press has joined them. iW —Washington Post.
