_Nevapa City Datuy TRANSCRIPT ~ trial aspirations and hopes to grow and prosper, must needs — NAT P. BROWN, Proprietor. special Dispatohes oT rnc FRED HE. BROWN, Manager. TERMS OF SUBSORILPTION $6_Per Year . By Carrier, a Delivered toany vart of the city. ———_ 12 1-2 Per Week Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City JULY 1, 1904 To Be Inaugurated March 4, 1905: FOR PRESIDENT, THEODORE ROOSEVELT FOR VICE-PRESIDENT, Charles Warren Paippankks. NE of the first requisites of a good business man, in this age of mercantile activity, is that he should understand the art of advertising, and the same rules that govern private concerns should govern the business affairs of cities. Every civilized town that has induslet the world know what it has to offer by way of inducements. Manufacturing enterprises, educational institutions, business and professional men are ever seeking desirable lo— cations, and it is a noticeable fact that comparatively few. cities and towns are attracting them. This is because many towns which possess good water power, good shipping facilities, good school and residential advantages, lack the life and enterprise to let the world know what they possess. They do not grow because they are unknown. They are like the drowsy merchant who doesn’t think. it worth while to advertise, but prefers to sit and watch the spiders spin webs across his doorway. Every new enterprise that locates in a town adds to the prosperity and business possibilities of every dealer in the place, and every citizen who has his own good and the good of the community at heart should take a hand in getting his town into touch with the busy, wide-awake} world. . @4é#4e46663 € A GOOD SERMON ¢ N a recent issue the Oakland Herald preached an exceptionally good editorial sermon on the vacation season, the sentiments of which we most cheerfully indorse. ' This article, which we reproduce in part, should be read NAVAL BATTLE GOING OM CHEE Foo; July 1—A terrific and important naval en‘. gagement is in progress this afternoon near Port Arthur. , Two battleships and four cruisers are actively engaged. A terrific explosion was seen and heard’ but it is not euewin whether it was Japanese or Russian battleship blown up. NE FINALLY VICTORIOUS MouxDAN, July 1—Heavy fighting occurred June 26th near Port Arthur. The Japanese fleet shelled the coast while a strong force landed attacking the heights which were occupied by the Russians. The Japanese riflemen were driven back three times with heavy loss, but finally forced the Russians to retire from their main position. The Russians lost seven high officers and over two hundred men killed. The Japanese loss was much heavier. Personal Noles. N. Davis is over from Renz. J. W. Marks is here from Sacrae mento. W. H. Corbine and son left for Downievilte this morning, ; Frank Hall, the mining man, is here from San Francisco. J. Myertholen of San Francisco is fu town. D. E. Among this special line of goods are to be found some 0 by young and old: “Vacation, after a few days of freedom from all care in order that the strings of the human instrument may relax their tension, should be mainly devoted to learning the things that the school does not teach. Manual work should be found for every school boy who can be put to work, work that will require him to use his hands to some purpose. If he can be made to earn his books and his clothes for next year’s schooling, so that he cau learn what money is worth as well as learn to work and how to work, the lessons will be worth more than the things he will earn. This is a workday world, and the person who does not learn to love work will never drink of the elixir of life. The girls, whether rich or poor, might put in their vacations learning how to cook, sew and keep house. Unlimited gadding about will not male women of them and may. sow in their natures the seeds of demorialization. To be the mistress of her home even the grandest lady needs to be familiar with the humblest employments of the household, and . . eelebrate the first settlement of the ‘. commonwealth of Virginia by bolding the best way to familiarize herself with them is to do them Those employments are not menial which we do for ourselves or for others for a recompense of love, but only when done for a wage. It is the wage and not the service that makes a servanta servant. If mother does it, it is not thought to be degrading, nor will it if the daughter does it. George Bynon ‘. Death of a Child.
