Cante rar Wost, Cal.
16th Mayy 1950.
Sir,
I hove the honor to report the foll wing
dircumsiances and my rrocecdings rolative to a reeent
murder co mitted in tho vicinity by Indians, viz:
\ moscace was received by me on the “th inste
from Janes Walsh residing on Volt Greek, some tventy tvo
} miles uo the Mnigrant Road, between Bear Greck and Yuba
‘. Rivor that on the day previous (7th inst.) some twenty
_Indiens had made an attack on Samuel H. Yolt and his
. brother George Molt, who were gnuistly working in or about
their saw mili located on said creck & abou$ half a mile
fron Walsh's cavine anual He Eelt wag illed and George
goverly wounded by arrows = tholr anbin robbed at once of
all valuables * subsequently both eabin and sav miil have
becn burnt to the ground, sunnegil to be the wore of the
gare party of natives. cn the monant of hearin: the e
facts, hiving ous 9 privates for dutyy = detached Tte
Hendorsiott, one Coryvoral & five privates to the scene
of tho murder with odera to arrest, if pos fnle, ony of
the guilty party. D Cte Porray ace ripantod $e doe and
to render professional ata to tho wounded man Holt * I
an glad to report is opinion thst sald wounds are sob
nortale Lt. He returned on the llth tnste without hov ing
found any save one Tndisn, who was seen loitering near the
scene of the depudation and whom he secured unior the
possibility of his being a Lonkeout of the warlike party,
but no bedy of Indians were found & their previews eamps
were entirely abandoned, which, in eomnection with other
facts, convineos me that the culrrits have esca ed to the
ease Tans frock
+
Wee
Frou the ame reliable source Ian informed of
the provable eause of this othemise unaccountable
affair, as tho Messrs. Nolt hve bocn all winter on the
most friendly tervs with the Tnifons * even tore have
treated thom iindly * how Ataily. It sesms that on or
about the ith inst. so:c ten white men mado an attack
on this Inidan Camp & leilled tue (£f not three) of the
Indians, uder the imprexsion tnat satd Indians or some
others hind stolen some of their cattle wich wore then
rigging ~ but behold the very next day, after having
borsted of their feat, the lost eattie were founde It
may readily be guoposed that, in rovengdy the notives fell
wpon the Holts as the nost available vietins & eonsidering
that after such outrages a1 white mon wore equally at
faults and thus has on: becn murdered + another severely
wounded & their property, tho work and earnings of many
months (for with themill were c neuned some thousands
feat of lumber) purtoly im consequences of a lawless
aggression of white Een in the first instance! !
