N. P. BROWN. t. 8, OALEING.
<. JULY 10, 1899.
“Afnanias misdirected his talefts.
That.was his main difficulty.” “Why,
he was a person ‘of unmitigated mendacity,” replied the man who never
allows his feelings to distarb his
vocabulary. “Of course. That’s what
we are obliged to call him. But if he
had cunfined himself to predicting cold
waves in summer and. hot waves in
winter he might have been held up. to
admiration as an optimist.”
A certain girl, with a philosopher’s
bead on her shoulders, says: “The
first time my fellow kissed me I felt
like a tub of roses swimming in honey,
nutmeg and cranberries. I felt as if
something was running thiough my
nerves on feét of diamonds, escorted
by several little cupids in chariots
drawn by angels, shaded by honeysuckles, and the whole spread over
with melted rainbows.”
-2@~EChappie bad just returned from a
visit to England. “Now, my dear boy,”
said his friend who met him on the
pier, “keep your mouth shut. Don’t
say a word to the custom house’ people.” “Fawncy, now!” said Chappie,
“And why, me deah fellah?” “Because
they’ll make you pay duty on that new
Eaglish accent of yours.” “Quite so !”’'
And he smuggled it in.
“Mushrooms are queer vegetables,”
said the professor. “At night there
will be no signs of them, and in the
morning they will be found sturdy and
full grown.” “Yes,” answered the man
who lives in atown where all wires are
supposed to be underground, “mushrooms are queer that way. And I’ve
noticed the same thing about telegraph
and telepbone poles.”

“Gran’pop,” he began, turning the
loaves of his book, “did your history
use to say that the Spaniards settled
this country?” “I believe it did, my
my boy.” “Well, the new ones won't
say that.” “What will they say, Ostend?” “This country settled the
Spaniards.” Then grandpop gave him
a dime.
