= OR THE LITTLE-ONES.
The Original of Tom Brown of Rugby,
the Schoolboy Hero.
Few -better books are known’
among English speaking boys than
“Tom. Brown’s School Days» at
Rughy.” Thomas Arnold, Jr., was
at Rugby when Thomas Hughes,
9: the Tom Brown of the school life,
.was a pupil there,‘and in “Passages
Ina Wandering Life” gives his recollections of the boys’ hero. —
Tom Hughes at fifteen was tall
for his age; his long, thin face, his
sandy: hair, his-length of limb and
his spare frame gave him a lankness
of aspect which was the cause, I
suppose, of the boys giving him the
extraordinary nickname of “executioner.”
No name could be less “p ropriate, for there was seen bat uman
or morose or surly in his looks, and
still less in his disposition. The
temper of a bully was utterly alien
to him, and he was always cheerful
and gay.
He was one of the best runners
in the school, and many a time have
I seen him in the quadrangle’ just
before “hare and hounds”—he being one of the hares—lightly clad
and with a bag of “scent” strapped
around him.
He was too keen eyed and observant to be specially popular, but
all the small boys liked him because
he was kind and friendly to them,
He reached the sixth form, but
left before he had risen high in it,
feeling, no.doubt, that his work lay
elsewhere. an

Bridges and Vibration.
There are very few bridges in the
world over which troops are allowed to march in regular step. In
generals when coming to a bridge
icularly a-saspension bridge, t
ate or bands are stopped, the array is broken and the soldiers pass
over without keeping step, or rather
taking pains not to keep step. The
reason is found in the fact that a
very slight initial vibration, if continued, is‘ imparted to the whole
structure, and in a short time becomes so strong a downward strain
endanger the safety of the etrongy
est bridge.
The same principle is illustrated
in some houses, which can be made
to tremble from roof to foundation
by persistently and regularly pressing with the foot on a loose board
in one’of the floors. A similar curious ci¥cumstance is seen in the case
of certain churches in whieh it is
dangerous to play the heavy pedal
pipes of a grand. organ, for the reason that the vibration becomes so
great as to shatter the panes of
glass in the windows and even to
imperil the safety of the roof.
The Real and the Unreal.
‘Do you expect to realize a fortune from your latest invention?”
asked the capitalist.
“No,” said the inventor. “I don’t
really expect to. I had some hopes,
but I suppose it will be the usual
programme. I’ll imagine the fortune and some one else will realize
it.”—Washington Star.

HOW EVERETT SPOKE.
Beautiful Development of the Orator’s
Thought and Method.
Edward Eyerett’s stories were
2 . inexhaustible. li any. speaker has
to get ready in a hurry for a great
occasion, let him look through the
index of the four volumes of: Ever.
ett’s speeches, and he will find mat.
ter enough not only to stimulate his:
own thought and set-his currents
what he will say.
But pretty soon the orator risea
into a higher plane. Some lofty
sentiment, some stirring incident,
some patriotic emotion, some play
of fancy or wit, comes from the
brain-or heart of the speaker. The
audience is hushed to silence. Perhaps a little mist begins to gather i in
their eyes. There is now an accent
of emotion in the voice, thcugh still
soft and-gentle. The Greek statue
hegins-te-move. There is life in the
limbs. There has been a lamp kindled somewhere behind the clear
and transparent blue eyes. The
flexible muscles of the face have
come to life now. Still there is no
jar or disorder. The touch upon
the nerves of the audience is like
that of a gentle nurse. The atmosphere is thatof a May morning.
There ‘is no perfume, but that of
roses and lilies. But still, age at
first, the warmer feelings are kindled in the hearts of the speaker
and hearers, ‘The frame. of the
speaker is transfigured. The trembling hands arv lifted high in air.
The rich, sweet voice fills the vast
audience chamber with its resonant
tones. At last the bugle, the trumpet the imperial clarion, rings out
1 and clear, and the vast audience is transported as to another
world—I had almost said to a seventh heaven. Read of the welcome
to Lafayette or the close of the
matchless eulogy on that illustrious
abject of the peaple’s love. Read
