TUESDAY,.... JULY 11,
1899.
The French are making prodigious
efforts to build warships as quickly as
their British rivals, and it seems that
they have already surpassed them, for
they have twice built a battleship within a period of six or seven months.
As, however, these ships have to wait a
year after being built before they can
undergo their steam trials, and another
year before they can receive their guns,
England is not worrying.
A servaut: of the late Prince Bismarck, named Robfig, who for the last
eight years had cut the Iron Chancellor’s hair, kept the locks by permission, and is now trying to sell them:
He finds difficulty in persuading the
German public that his relics are genuine, owing to the widespread tradition
established by the caricaturists that
Bismarck had only three hairs on the
top of his head.
The school children of New Albany,
Ind., have become so-fascinated with
the game of craps that parents have
appealed to the police to break up the
games. The children congregate in alleys, on school grounds and sometimes on the pavements: and “shoot”
for marbles, pins, pennies, chalk, pencils or anything they may possess.
Governor Poynter of Nebraska, who
is a fine horseman, until ‘recently had
& great dislike-for the bicycle. A few
weeks ago, however, he was induced to
learn to ride a wheel, and he is now an
ardent convert..
“éThere ain’t no use in shootin’ at a
retreatin’ Filipino,” growled the Kaneas volunteer. “It’s just a waste of
ammunition.” “That’s what,” assented
a comrade, “they outrun the bullets.”
“And you say this whisky is fifteen
years old?” asked the prospective
purchaser. “No,” replied the somewhat scrupulous distiller; “I said it
was fifteen-year-old whisky.”

“How many stories in that new block
of yours?” ‘“Two—a snake story and a
bare story.” “Eh?” “Saloon on the
first floor and the second floor is still
suipty.”

What Liquid Air Will Do.
Think—a kettle of liquid air on a
cake of ice—the ice is so much -hotter
than the liquid air that it sets the kettle a boiling.
Spill a dipperful of it on your ‘best
silk dress You see it saturated. Look
again—not a mark of moisture.
‘Dip a handkerchief in it;
thoroughly. Draw it oat—dey as can
be,
Throw a quart on the floor. Hear it
fall, see it spread—in a second no sign.
Put your finger in it—feels Tike velvet.
Put an egg in it—you'll need a“b'g
hammer to break it. ;
Mercury becomes as metal—drives
nails.
Iron and steel become as brittle as
glass.
Potatoes become like ivory balls,
Lead—stiff and elastic like steel.
Rabber ball—fragile as an egg shell.
How.Fish Hooks Are Made.
Boys can meke-a primitive pin fiéh
hook with a single bend, but. it takes
six strokes of a little machine to’ turn
out the regulation fish hook of steel
wire. The first stoke snips off a bit
of the wire, the second. stroke forms
the loop where the line is fastened, the
third hacks the other end, the fourth
flattens and bends back the barb, the
fifth makes the point, the, sixth bends
the wire and the hoo« slips into a little
holder, ready to be finished.
This is done by either japanning it
red hot, then cooling it in oil.
