MeKinley and the Reporter’ Who Persistently Assailed Him. During one of his congressional campa Major McKinley was followed from place to place by a reporter for a paper of opposite political faith, who is Gescrihed as being one of those “shrewd, persistent fellows who are el. tunity: and skilled In making the most noyed -by the misrepresentation to which he was almost daily subjected, he could not help admiring the skill and persistency with which ibe was assailed, His admiration, ipo, was not upmixed with compassion, for the reporter ‘was Ill, poorly clad and had an annoying cough. One night Mr. Meby town at which he was announced to speak. The weather was wretchedly raw and cold, and what followed fs thus described: He had not gone far when he heard that cough and knew that the reporter was riding with the driver on the exposed seat. The major called to the driver to stop and alighted. “Get down off that seat, young man,” he said. The reporter obeyed, thinking the time for the major’s vengeance had come “Here,” said Mr. McKinley, taking off his overeoat, “you put on this overcoat and get into that carriage.” “But, Major McKinley,” said the reporter, “I guess you don’t know who 1 am. I heve been with you the whole campaign, giving it to you every time you spoke, and I am going over tonight to rip you to pieces if I can.” “T know,” said Mr. McKinley, “but vou put on this coat and get inside and get warm so that you can du a good job.” —Chautauquan. A Tired Man. Once there was a man who complain. ed constantly because it required so much toil.for him to make a living: He declared that he would rather be buried than work for a living, and so “his neighbors started out to gratify his wish. .A stranger, seeing them about to entomb a living man, inquired why they were doing so. On being told thai the man-complained of having to work .for a living and preferred to be buried, the stranger’s heart was moved, and he offered to give the complaining man ten bushels of corn. “Is it shelled?’ asked the discontented soul, and when informed it was not he remarked, “Well, then, let the burial preceed.”

Wounds in civil life differ érom those in military life in the greater after danger of septic involvement: Mevolver cartridges are more liable than are rifle cartridges to bave been handled frequently, to have been carried 4 dirty pockets and.to have ore in contact with various forms’ of Infectious materials that may prove of serious consequence. when buried in the tissues. Moreover, revolver cartridges are covered with a coating of grease, and this encourages an accumulation of manifold microbic material, some of which may prove to be of. virulently fectious nature. Rifle bullets are practically always sterilized by the intense heat developed the air while in a heated condition still further serves to cleanse them of any extraneous material that may chance to have accumulated on their surfaces. This cleansing process is very effectually begun by the rifling of the rifle barrel through which the bullet forces its way. All these favorable factors are lacking in the case of the revolver bullet, and so it Is possible that In any given case such a bullet may carry 4nfectious material with it into the tissues. If this were in small amount, nature might effectually wall it off «#d no se rious consequences result. On the other hand, such infectious material! might lie seemingly dormant for days, but really slowly gathering strength by multiplicationand when its toxins were. c!aborated in sufficient amount they might paralyze protective chemotaxis and produce-a septic condition:— New York Medical News. oo ee. eee Perfumes Were Popular. The rage for perfumes reached Its height. during the reign of Louis XV. Throughout the continent his court was kuown as the ‘‘scented court.” It was then the custom when giving a large entertainment for the hostess to inform her guests what particular odor she would use for .perfuming her reomp; end each guest. would use that odor in making her toilet. At couré-a different perfume was used for each day of the week. Much more attention was paid to the use of the perfume than to soap and water, and cleanliness -was not numbered among the virtues of that age. How Pearls Are Sorted. The average diver thinks it a fatr day’s work to secure 100 pearl oysters in 50 feet of water. After being taken ashore the mollusks are allowed to die. when their shells open of their own ac. cord. The pearls are classified by passing them through a series of sieves, which assdért them into different sizes, Those which are very small or de fective are sold to make a preparation for.-sore eyes and nervouscomplaints that is very popular in the east.—Pear son’s. tis Photographs. : . and make them in a first-class manner. 1 also frame > them when ,s0 . ordered. About 200 miles in every direction is the distance a man can see when standing, ona clear day, on the peak of the highest mountain—say, at a height of 26,668 feet, or a little over five miles above the level of the sea. An observer must be at a height of 6,667 feet above sea level to see objects at a distance of 100 miles. The distance in miles at which an object upon the surface of the earth Is. visible is eyual to the square root of one and a half times the height of the observer in feet above thet zea level. Probably one-fourteenth to one-tenth of the distance given by ‘the formula would have to be deducted, owing to the refraction of the atmos phere. A Japanese on Japanese Women. Among the Japanese women a certain number have no reason to envy the European ladies tn the matter of purely white skins. When that white ness is slightly rose colored, it is in Japanese eyes the ne plus ultra of beauty. Unfortunately, that beauty soon fades, The proportion of white skinned women is about one in ten. It is needless to say that this whiteness is held in high esteem. Cave Dwellers In Dieppe. People who only know the gayer side of Dieppe would be surprised to hear cf the existence of the cave dwellers there. One is apt to connect such people with the knawed® bones and flint ‘implements of prehistoric times. But Lere they are at Dieppe within a stoné’s . throw of the casino, and they may be seen any day about the town selling the shellfish from the rocks outside their. habitations. They have certain marked characteristics, one being a peculiar eomplexion 6f their own that ean be traced la-gely toa disinelina: tion on the part of the cave dweller to avail himself of the water that washes so close to his door. Their language also is peculiar, but whether it really belongs to the stone age no oné seems to have discovered: They have to bold a license from the municipality, though, whicb savors of no age but the present. ~— London Chronicle: Why He Never Attaing Her 14s}, A man who Is earning the living for a ‘family doesn't have time to live up to his wife’s ideals, and by the time he has made his money he is too old and wants to be comfortable. — Atchison (Kan.)
