Rev. W. W. Case, in a sermon preached
at San Francisco last Sunday, among other
things said: ‘‘Récent statistics show us
that out of 60,000,000 people in the United

the wealth-of the entire.country.. Now, ]
ask, where does the poor man come in?
When it is known that this mass of wealth

does as it pleases with the law, what will
become of the liberty of this people if th
power is not stayed ?”

For Re-Election.
J. J. Greany is announced as a candidate
for re-election to the office of County Clerk.
It is a settled fact that he will receive the
nomination by acclamation, for the reason
that the Democracy cannot find within ite
ranks @ man so popular or so well qualified
for the place as Mr. Greany. He has
proved himself a faithful servant, and has
given universal satisfaction to all who have
had occasion to do business with him.

a ‘tbogie” nor a ‘‘kelpie,” nor any other of
those spirits which the credulous have supposed to haunt the banks of rivers and

and though invisible, it is very terrible and
tenacious when it siezes you. Hostetter’s

attack those whose systems are fortified
with the great medicinal defensive agent.

LEADER KNOX MISSING
Did He Send Out the Murdering Fiends?
ANOTHER TRAIN TO START TODAY
The Strikers Sullen and Threatening.
One Reported to Have Been
Shot Yesterday.
Special to DAILY TRANSCRIPT.
SacraMEnT0, July 12,
Everything is very quiet here this morning.
Private Dugan, of the United States
troops, who was injured in the wreck of yesterday afternoon, died late last night: ;
The wrecking train is on the scene of the
disaster to recover the bodies of the dead
engineer and soldiers.
In all four men were killed and four
wounded.
Two companies “of the regular troops,
with two ‘days’ rations, left the city this
morning. Their destination is unknown.
Last evening a squad of National Guard
troops raided four houses near the railroad
depot’and seized a wagon load of guns and
ammunition that had been hid away by
strikers. The raiders also captured some
documents that contain evidence damaging
to the Railway Union.
ARRESTED ON SUSPICION.
Four men have been arrested-onsuspicion
of wrecking the west-bound train that
started out from here yesterday. The
charge of murder will be preferred against
them, s
One of the prisoners is a professional
strike agitator named Worden.
before’the wreck he hired a team and driver
and started in the direction of the point
where the wreck occurred.
An hour
On the road out five more men were taken
into the vehicle, and the driver. -was sent
back to the city. The driver observed
some track-laying tools ia possession of the
gang. After the wreck he informed the
officers of his suspicions. They went out
and found the tools in the brush near. the
scene of the wreck.
STRIKERS STILL THREATENING,
Today the strikers are in most instances
silent and sullen, but some of the more
loud-mouthed are making ominous threats.
It is probable that another effort will be
made today to get a train through’ to San
It is reported this morning that one
striker was killed in yesterday’s skirmish
on the river bank. This cannot be verified.
At one o'clock this afternoon all is quiet
here,
THE EASTERN SITUATION IMPROVING,
The general news from the East indicate
that the strikers have weakened at many
points. In but few places are the workers
going out in obedience to the order fora
general strike,
AT OAKLAND,
At Oakland yesterday the strikers overcame the deputy marshals and prevented
trains from leaving for Sacramento. No
blood was spilt nor were any bones broken.
[he deputies simply retreated before overwhelming forces.

THE SITUATION TODAY.
‘Sentiment Changing — Has -Leader
Knox Skipped Out?
SACRAMENTO, July 12, 2:45 vr, m.—There
is not much new to tell today regarding the
strike situation.
This evening’s Bee specials indicate that
the backbone of the strike is broken, particularly so far as Chicago is concerued,
Unele Sam’s prompt action has bad the
effect of subduing the anarchistic spirit, and
the presence here of Government tretoe has
checked mest of the wild talk on the part of
the strikers and compelled them to walk a
atraight line.
> Very damaging evidence has been found
by the officers against the men who on yesa train and killing several parties.
THE HAND OF KNOX.
They have found that four men left here
in a carriage hired upon a written order from
Harry Knox, chairman of the strikers’ committee, and that they went near: the scene
of the disaster taking tools and dynamite
cartridges.
The young man who drove the carriage
has given the officers very valuable information.
Wholesale arrests will probably’ be made
this evening,
Knox has not been seen today, and the
belief prevails that he has skipped out. It
may be, however, that he is only in hiding.

ROUNDABOUT ROUTES.
How Our Mails. Are Being Dispatched jand Received.
So far as the sending out of mails is concerned, this portion of the State is not entirely deprived of commurication with the
outside world despite the fact that the Central Pacific has been tied up for two weeks
past.
Comparatively little matter outside of
the letters and papers from San Francisco,
Oakland and Sacramento and adjacent
towns is coming in, however, and that is
far short of the amount received in ordinary
times tor the reason that people are not
writing near as many letters as they do
when the trains are yunning uninterruptedly. :
Mail for Sacramento, San Francisco and
‘the States” is sent out each morning by
the Marysville stage. At Marysville it is
transferred the following morning to. the
river steamer that leaves at 6 o'clock a,
M., stops at Sacramento that night. and
goes through to San Francisco next day.
The Eastern mail leaves San Francisco by
-ocean steamer for Portland whence it starts
by the Northern Pacific railroad for its des~
tination, No Eastern mail has yet arrived
by this route,
"It then takes three full days to get mail
from or send it to San Francisco.
Auburn, Neweastle and other railroad
towns in Placer county get their mail via
Colfax.
The Sierra Valley, Truckee and Lake
Tahoe mail gues via the Sierra City stage,
and that for Emigtant Gap and Towles by
stage to Dutch Flat.
Mail for Wheatland and vicinity goes by
stage through Smartsville.
No arrangement lias yet been made for
getting the State of Nevada mails through.
The Narrow Gauge railroad is carrying
mail every day between this city and Colfax, leaving at 10 A. M. and returning at 2
