A STRONG MAN,
som. of the Wonderful Feats of a
Pioneer Grass Valley Miner.
Speaking of the death in Nevada
recently of Michael Cullen, an early
of last evening says:
John Judd Sr. was sinking a shaft
somewhere in the vicinity of Allison
Ranch and was using a horse and
whim to hoist the dirt. Cullen went
to Judd and offered to bet him that he
(Cullen) could hoist a heavier load out
of the shaft with a windlass with his
bare hands than the horse could pull
out of the shaft. Judd would not avcept the bet. &
Cullen was a dauntless fighter, and
his combative nature involved him in
many’ serious difficulties. Passing
along the streets of Grass Valley one
day he sawa friend involved ina row,
surrounded. by fighting men. A glance
was: sufficient. He dashed into the
areles, picked up his friend, threw pias
out of the crowd with the remark,: “
away now, Iam good for the lot of sa
and peace was soon declared. He had
a terrible fight with “Gill” Mead, a
colored barber, who was like himself a
Mead’s shop, then on Mill street, just
below where H. Uphoff now keeps.
The fight lasted over half an hour and
resulted in a draw, suve that Mead had
part of his nose either bitten or gouged
off. Mead was @ well-known jumper
and could do 42 feet in three jumps
either forward or backward. He used
to be a partner of J obnson, the barber,
then in Downieville. Old timers wi}}j
remember the terrible rough and tumble fight he had at Allison Ranch in
which he beat his antagonist to death.
He was saved from the gallows by the
{inmates of the “Star,” then a famous
. resort,
It took a long life to wear Cullen
out. He never avoided a danger in his
life and all he ever .asked for was a
place to stand and use his eyes and
