PROSPECTING.
Suggestions of a Practical Mining Man of
Grass Valley.
The Tidings says: About two years ago a
few plucky miners penetrated the unknown
regions of the great desert of Western Australia, under almost insurmountable diff
culties, Water was very scarcé and
obtainable only by sinking wells ten feet
below the surface, and when obtained was
so salty as to be drinkable only after it was
distilled, After great suffering and privae
tion they were rewarded with the discovery
of what is now the celébrated Coolgardie
gold fields, which now employ several thousand men. The number of inhabitants has
increased from these few pioneer heroes to
7000, and with the influx of British capital
is likely to soo double that number, This
is very encouraging to prospectors every—
As the season has now arrived for
Nevadas, which abound with undiscovered
gold ledgés, and as there are a great. many
men unemployed, they might do worse than
to spend the summer months in the cooler
regions exploring the hidden treasure of the
earth. It would be well, too, for the whole
community, dependent as we are, almost
entirely on mining, if the good example
shown by the Australian government was
followed in this country,
siderable sums of money are: there approEvery year conpriated to the development of promising
resulting in the discovery of
many good mines, and of course in the emprospects,
ployinent of a great number of men, who
otherwise would be unemployed. “In the
absence of this government aid, would it not
be worth considering that a syndicate could
be formed to assist the working thiners in
this important pursuit, providing sufficient
capital to pay their board and capitalizing
their labor, giving a $2 share for every
day’s work to the working man and a $2
share to the capitalists for every $2-worth of
furnished? This would be a
simple means of employing to a great advantage our surplus labor, and would no
provisions
doubt result in the discovéry of many
millions of dollars now lying dormant, As
s00n asa good discovery is made it could be
sold toa company and the proceeds distributed as a dividend. The shares from
the start could be quoted on the stock boards
throughout. the United States, so. that the
men could-sell 4 few shares at any time to
aid their families, As the production of
gold means a greater’ purchasing power in
the country and consequently a benetit to
every, resident, such a scheme wonld no
doubt meet with the approbation of capita]ists generally, especially as it is to aid
necexsitous families in the first place and at
the same time to doa general good to the
community. No doubt if such a
scheme was properly organized and carried
out under proper supervision, that discoveries of great importance would result,
and possibly other Comstock and Coolgardies and even South
Africas may be unearthed,

“It is now believed that the wonderful
electric energy which is to be generated by
the force of the American river at Folsom,
and which is to turn the wheels of commerce in Sacramento, will reach this city
next Saturday or Sunday,’ says the Bee,
A number of the prominent citizens are determined that the great event shall not go
unnoticed without some sort of demonstration: Arrangements have been made to fire
one hundred guns at Sutter’s Fort at the
moment ‘the first electric railway car is
moved by power from Folsom.
The business men of Sacramento have
willingly subscribed coin to defray the
expeuse of firing the salute,

death by falling from a freight train near
Colfax on June 22d, Superintendent C. A.
Lillie, of Oak Tree mine at Maybert, was in
Colfax this week, He informed the Sentinel that John Morton had worked for him . atthe Utica miine in Calaveras county for

GIVEN HIS JUST “DESERTS,
McKay of Truckee Tried and. Found
Guilty in a Short Space of Time.
The trial of Grant McKay, accused of
attempted homicide at Truckee, came up
in the Superior Court yesterday and before
the sun went down he had been tried and
convicted by’ a jury of his peers. It was
undoubtedly one of the quickest trials on
record in this county. A jury had been
secured by 1:30 o’clock and shortly before
five o'clock a verdict. had been rendered in
accordance with the evidence.
McKay is the person who took a shot at
and &ttempted to kill a woman because
she would not give him money, Four
witnesses figured in the case, three of
whom were for the prosecution, and ‘the
prisoner himself: being for the defense,
P._T. Riley appeared for the prosecution
and Frank J. Dennis defended. McKay
will receive his sentence next Monday
morning at 10 o’clock.

A Good Appetite
Always acoompanies good health, and an
absence of appetite is an indication of something wrong.’ The loss of a rational desire
for food is soon followed by lack of strength,
for when the supply of fuel is cut off the tire
burns low. The system gets into a low
state, and is. liable to severe attacks of
disease, The universal testimony given by
those who have used Hood’s Sarsaparilla, as
to its great merits in restoring aud sharpening the appetite, in promoting healthy action
of the digestive organs, and as a purifier of
blood, constitutes the strongest recommendation that can be urged for any medicine.
