opened again. Forty men will be employed in rebuilding a large fiume to

One of the largest pockets ever discovered in Siskiyou county, was
brought to Yreka last Wednesday and
left at the Siskiyou County Bank. it
contained 217-ounces of gold, and will
probably yield in” the neighborhood
of $8500. The gold was found on Ash
creek, Klamath river, just below the
old Captain Pope place, by Harry
Nichots and his partner, who have been
mining there for some time.
. The total capital invested: in mines
in Southern California is estimated
at over $15,000,000.
Nine thousand tons of copper ore in
kilns three-quarters. of a mile long:is
being. roasted at Keswick, Shasta
county. The ore will burn three weeks
before it is ready for the smelter. Yet
this quantity of ore is only onethird-of what is being similarly treated
about the smelters. :
Oa the road from Randsburg to Garlock placer mines have been discovered
and the miners are SieaD EN up $4 per
day.
The Datch mine is reported by the
Tuolumne Independent to have two
distinct channels of ore bodies, each of
from ten to twenty feet in width and
high grade at that. They are just completing an addition of ten more stamps,
making now twenty in all, and only 300
feet deep. Over $1,000,000 has been refused for this property, says the same

An Ex-Treasurer Suicides,
Eureka, Cal., July 18.—Retiring City
Treasurer Young addressed a note to
the Chief of Police’ asking cer
to take charge of everything in his
store, saying the stock was everything
he had. He went on to say that last
year he was robbed of $2,425, but. that
he had not said anything about it, not
even to his family, because he knew
nobody would believe it any more than
they would now. Twenty-four hours
later his dead body was found on the
. beach where the waves had washed it
up. His throat was cut.
Mail Carriers Frozen.
Port TownsenD, Wash., July 18.—A
letter received from Alaska tells of
three. men named Blackstone, Boettcher and Mollique being frozen to
death while carrying mail over the
glacier between Junea City and Prince
William Sound. Charles Willoughby
found Blackstone’s body on the beach
wrapped in a blanket.—By his side was
half the carcass of his dog and there
was evidence that he had eaten the rest
of it. His companions’ dead bodies
were. found on the top of the glacier.
Two Children Suffocated.
Jersny Crry, July 13.—The two children of W. Zeigler werefsuffocated here
this morning ina tenement house. A
fire started in Edward Mansner's
bakery,and Mr.and Mrs. Zeigler and
their three children were overcome by
smoke. The firemen rescued the father,
mother and one of the children. Oue
child aged. three and another six
months old are dead.

WaAsHINGTON, July 13.—The chairman
of the National Silver Republican
Party has telegraphed the Silver Republicans of Ohio to not put up a
ticket of their own, but to stand by the
party that adopts a silver platform.

Barton, 16-year-old daughter of Adam
Winebrenner of Beatrice, Neb., who
has arrived in Denver to live with her
aunt, Mrs. Em. M. Bishop, still bears
marks of a cruel beating which caused
her to run away from home @ fortnight
ago. Yesterday. Winebreriner was taken
from jail by a mob of indignant citizens of Beatrice and lashed and tarred
and feathered. Winebrenner is a son

“Church of God.”

24 hours up to eight o’clock this morning the rainfall was 314 inches, being

A Desperate Miner,
SeaTriez, July 18.—J. W: Mathes of
Boise City, Idaho, while en route to the
Yukon gold fields, attempted to shoot
the canyon between Lawes Linderman
and Bennett. He swamped his boat,
losing all his supplies. In desperation
caused by his misfortunes he swam
ashore and committed suicide by shooting himself through the head with a
‘rifle.
Big Purse For Trotters.
New Yorr, July 13.—The announcement is made-that the much-talked-of
$25,000 purse for a trotting race 1s now }*
a certainty, and that the event will be
run off at the fall meeting at Fleetwood
Park.
The Bradburys Reconciled.
San Francisco, July 13.—The erring
Mrs. Bradbury, who left her husband
to take up with the fortunes of Ward,
so cruelly wronged, and will resume
her wifely relations with him as soon
as she’ is able to leave this city to meet
him. Telegraphic communication has
been keep up between the friends of
Mrs. Bradbury and Colonel John = ever
since Mrs. Banning arrived, and from
a close friend it is learned that the
Colonel is willing to forget and forgive
and is eager to welcome the wayward
beauty back to his arms. As soon us
Mrs. Bradbury is able to travel she will
go direct to him. At: least, that is the
program. that has thus far been arranged. If nothing happens meanwhile
to upset the arrangements, it will be
carried out.
Struck a Camp Meeting.
PEEKSKILL, N. Y., July 183—A bolt of
lightning struck the Y. M. ©. A. tent
yesterday. There was great consternation among the people who were in “it.
After everything was over it'was found
that Corporal Doland was killed’ and
eleven others were unconscious. It is
not known how badly they are hurt.
Physicians were promptly summoned
and did all they could to i the suffering. é e.

Des Mores, Ia., July 18.—So far no
Iowa miners have joined the strikers,
but they are likely todoso. There are
10,000 in the State, and while they are . »
not well organized their ‘sympathies
are with the strikers. In case the shipping of Iowa coal to Illinois to break
the strike in the latter State 1s begun,
the Iowans will be likely to quit.

$300 Worth of Specimens.
For.some time past‘the Superintendent of the Good Title mine at Indiana
Ranch, Yuba county, has suspected
that one of the miners employed there
‘was stealing specimens from the mine.
4A detective was employed-to watch the
suspected party and went to work in
the mine. Friday the suspect was
caught stealing specimens from the
‘ich ore shoot where he was working.
In the evening he was arrested as soon
as he game out. of the mine. Soon after he complained of feeling sick and
stepped to a window in the hoisting
vomiting. While leaning out. the window--he managed to dump from his
pockets a lot of specimens, which fell
tothe ground below and were noticed
mens-he was trying to get away with
are valued at over $300.
It is estimated that the same man
has stolen about $1600 worth of specimens since he has been working at
the mine. He was taken to Marysville
for trial.
