The wonderful development of certain faculties in the cases of persons who have ldst the use of some of their natural fanctions, or of others whose-facuities have not been fully developed, has long been a matter.of remark, but it is not alone the outside observers who appreciate the provisions of nature for the benefit of the unfortanates. The sufferers themselves often appreciate this fulgrow to depend so much upon their aequired faculties as to be afraid of a a even if they have the chance of ne. An illustration of this is giver by a woman in Brooklyn who never has learned to read or write. In no way could cne discover this except by her direct test, for she is one of the best educated women in the country, conversant with languages, .art, literature and all the current topics of the day. She is rich, too, and could afford all the services of the best teachers if she but chose to learn to read, but she refuses to do so. When this-woman was a_ child, her parents lived far from schools, so she had no chance then to learn to read or write. As a mere child she began to earn. her own living, and again the chante for schooling slipped away. Then Is Your Throat Weak? Your throatis weak. Any @j . unusual exposure or quick change in temperature causes roughness and wneasiness. Sometimes you have a feeling of tightness as if some foreign body were there. You can treat it with troches and washes, but you don’t reach the seat of the trouble. Throat weakness is a symptom of more ‘general disturbance. Scott's Emutsion of Codliver Oil does cure weak throats by nourishing and. strengthening the system. Book about it sent free, SCOTT & BOWNE, Chemists, New York. she married and the cares of a family took up her time. By the time the babies were off her hands, her husband had grown rich, and then she began ‘her real education, and now, as a widow, she continues it. Her companions' read to ker and talk with her about all the topics which interest her. Yearsof such work have stored her mind with a rich treasure of knowledge, and there is not a page of a book that has been read to her that she is not familiar with. Her stores of knowledge are at her instant command. Why will she not learn to read? Because, she says, she fears that this wonderful memory, which is now such a treasure house to her, might be impaired if she’ were to do anything to weaken the demands upon it. What such a memory can do is well illustrated in the case of-a tailor of this city who cannot read or write. He is probably the most widely known man in his business here, as for many years be has done business with New York’s firemen and policemen. Almost every man of these two bodies has dealings with ‘this tailor, and each month between the first and the tenth days he visits every: station house and engine and truck house in this city to collect his dues. He bas acquired considerable wealth, and it is said of him that in all the years he has dealt with the firemen and policemen he never was known tc make a mistake of acent in any man’s iccount, although all his records. of ransacticns have been kept im his head. —New York Sun. Experts have come to the conclusion that what kills trees in-London is not the soot flakes or the want of air or the drought, but the sewer gas, which at-’ tacks the roots so that the tree s00n withers and dies. Dade ERA PUETE steven the ac abi ore etl lise of Sat, On the: authority of Jack Hayes, the Circle City mail carrier, the Alaska Mining Record of June 30th says: Much excitement prevails all through . the Yukon district over the Clondyke discoveries, and all kinds of stories of the riches there are told, many of which Mr, Hayes says are true. It is . trae that two “tenderfeet,” railroad men from Los Angeles, Cal.—Frank’ . Summers and Obarles Olemens—have struck it rich. They went in a year ago and located on the Clondyke last fall. Clemens sold his interest . for $85,000 cash, and his partner, Summers, . held on two weeks later and got $50,000. ‘The money to pay the men -was taken out of the dump which had been lifted from the shaft on ‘the claim during the} winter. These two men had each panned ont $2500 on their claim while prospecting it. The man that bought Clemens’ in. terest bound the bargain with a $232] nugget which had been taken from the claim—the largest nugget yet found on. the Olondyke. Summers is a single man; Clemens has a wife and twe chil' dren in Los Angeles, Cal. It is said that both will come out on the nbéxt. boat via St. Michaels, bringing with. them their: little fortunes. Neither man had ever had any a si on in mining. Johnnie Marks got $10,000 for a quarter interest in his claim.: “Murph” . , Thorp has a claim out of which several . pans have been taken which Went $85 and $40 to.the pans Billy Leake bought . a claim from Tim Bell for $31,000 cash; Bell originally paid $85 for the claim. The owner of the adjoining claim says that he is positive that Leake will take out a half million fromthe claim. Alex MeDonald took one pan from his claim which tipped the scales to the tune of $800, and offered a-wager of $1000 that he could pick his dirt and: in twenty minutes get a pan that would go 100 . ounces—$1600; no one cared to cover the wager. Lucky Pete Wiborg, who has takén out more than $40,000 from Birch creek, is in the swim at Clondyke. A Mr. Clemens, cousin of Samuel L. Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, refused $10,000 for his chances on El Dorado. Other lucky ones are James Monroe, Doc. Owens and Olarence Berry. Those who know say Berry will take out: $50,000 to $100,000 this season.. Dick Lowe is panning for a living and is taking out the modest sum of $100 per day. According to the latest reports there are 2000 men in Clondyke. The Hills Route Finished. . “The men whc-have been at work un«der the direction of Col. George Stone making a survey of a proposed railroad route between Marysville and Nevada ‘City have finished that. part in the. ‘hills. Two routes were run from Grass Valley to thé plains and the work in the field has been discontinued. Sur‘veyor Bartlett has gone to San Fran-. . cisco to make a map of the routes and report on the same. ~eaeo 2@e Chance For Nevada Cityans. ‘There is a chance for some enterprising Nevada City speculators to get rich at. Marysville during the six days of racing there next month. The matter of disposing of the privileges has been left to Secretary Eckart, who will receive the bids and award the same.
