TALL ALASKA MINING
And. It Shosld Be ‘Taken With a Liberal Amount of Salt, =
On the-authority of Jack Hayes, the
Circle City mail carrier, the Alaska
Mining Record of June 30th says:
Much excitement prevails all through
. the Yukon district over the Clondyke.
discoveries, and all kinds of stories of
the riches there are told, many of
which Mr, Hayes says are true. It is
. trae that two “tenderfeet,” railroad
men from Los Angeles, Cal.—Frank
struck it rich. They went in a year
ago and located on the Clondyke last
. fall, Olemens sold. his interest for
$35,000 cash, and his partner, Summers,
held on two weeks later and got $50,00U.
‘The money to pay the men -was taken
out of the dump which had been-lifted
from the shaft on the claim during the
winter. i
These two men had each panned ont
$2500 on their claim while prospecting
it. The man that bought Clemens’ interest bound the bargain with a $282
nugget which had been taken from the
claim—the largest nugget yet found on
the Olondyke. Summers is a single
man; Clemens has a wife and twe children in Los Angeles, Cal. It is said
that both will come out on the nxt
boat via St. Michaels, bringing with
them their: little fortunes. Neither
man had ever had any experience in
mining. , as
Johnnie Marks got $10,000 for a quarter interest in his claim.: “Murph”
Thorp has a claim out of which several
pans have been taken which Went $35
and $40 to.the pan: Billy Leake bought
a claim from Tim Bell for $31,000 cash;
Bell originally paid $85 for the claim.
The owner of the adjoining claim says
that he is positive that Leake will take
out a half million fromthe claim. Alex
MeDonald took one pan from his claim
which tipped the scales to the tune of
$800, and offered a-wager of $1000 that
he could pick his dirt and in twenty
minutes get a pan that would go 100
ounces—$1600; no one cared to cover
the wager.
Lucky Pete Wiborg, who has takén
out more than $40,000 from Birch creek,
is in the swim at Clondyke. A Mr,
Clemens, cousin of Samuel L. Clemens,
better known as Mark Twain, refused
$10,000 for his chances on El Dorado.
Other lucky ones are James Monroe,
Doc. Owens and Olarence Berry. Those
who know say Berry will take out $50,000 to $100,000 this season. . Dick Lowe
is panning for a living and is taking
out the modest sum of $100 per day.
According to the latest reports there
are 2000 men in Clondyke.
The Hills Route Finished. .

route between Marysville and Nevada
‘City have finished -that. part in the

Valley to thé plains and the work in
the field has discontinued. Surveyor Bartlett has gone to San Francisco to make a map of the routes and
report on the same.

For several months past rumors have:
‘been ‘circulating around the State of}
the building of an airship at the Schilfig yanch on the bank of the Sacrament river in the western part of Sut-.
ter county. These stories have been
coming throngh the papers and several
residents of that locality who have hap
pened this way lately on camping tripshave in a measure verified them. 4
It now turns out that the whole story
from first to last was a fake.
Last March Tom Sherwood of the
Marysville Democrat’ was out among
the -hayseeds drumming up subscribers
for his paper,. when he cume to. the
Schillig place. Finding Nobody
around the house he:.strolled out. towards the cow-yard to take 4 look at
the blooded stock till somebody put in
al appearance. Hearing the noise of
hammering and sawing in the barn he
went to the dvor\of the building and
found it locked. Peeking through a
crack he saw Farmer Schillig and his
hired man inside building a queer looking big thing with long arms that were
a cross between birds’ wings and sculling oars,
“Hullo there!” shouted editor Sherwood pytting his mouth to a knothole.
‘4
Both the workmen dropped. their
tools and looked around in a startled
and guilty way.
’ “Hullo, I say,” repeated Sherwood.
“Tf you don’t clear out of here Til
make.you wish you’d never come,”
yelled the honest. rancher .grabbing a
broad-ax and rushing for the door, the
hired map brandishing a big chisel
and bringing up the rear.
-Sherwood coneluded to cut and run,
and while he was trying to decide which
way to go the excited workmen bolted
out of the building.
“By gosh, if it ain’t old Tom Sher.
wood,” exclaimed the farmer dropping
his ax, And then they had a laugh and .
a handshake, and Schillig said to the .
hired man: “Here, Jake, shake hands '
with my friend Sherwood from Marys.
my hired man Jake.”
Editor Sherwood was of course curi.
ous to know why his simple salutation .
through the knot-hole had caused such .
consternation. Of course he asked. .
After some hesitation Schillig told.

that for more than a year past they
